I cut my tongue on my mask! #halloween God, I love everything about that show. Anyone know a good streaming site where I can get the new episodes? (I can't do bittorent)
No problem. The reason I use the picture of 21 as my avatar is to remind myself (and everyone else) not to take all this fanboy stuff so freaking seriously. Of course, I can't say I always follow that myself. #halloween
I don't celebrate Halloween but since people ask all the time "What's your costume gonna be?", me and my sisters started to make up costumes. Last year, we were Red Sox fans (Just wore our hats). This year, she's "Under-Emotional Girl" and I'm Alternate Universe G-Juggler".
*P.S. I think I lost my star. Can anyone help find it?
@CJG: Does that make me your BF? I called it at the same time. Was thinking it was possible before tho. I knew pretty quick that Dad was either a criminal that didnt have time for his new baby (dead mom) or that mom just died and he was still working through it.
I am curious what kind of engineering job he has that allows him to afford the mansion and price tag for Echo tho.
@justsomereportingguy: I would imagine that, to most viewers, the whole died-in-childbirth thing wasn't a surprise. It certainly wasn't to me or my sister.
Hrm... This episode bothered me quite a bit. I'm never keen on stereotypical "mother's instinct" stuff (there are many many women who end up feeling like inadequate mothers because of this forced notion) and thought that the aspect of motherhood was handled very stereotypical and too simple for a show that normally skews those kinds of roles.
The father baffled me. He was really gonna give the kid up for adoption? Yeah, cuz I'm sure that would have gone over well with friends and family and (presumably) whatever business contacts he has that makes him uber rich. And really, Adele was right WHY NOT just hire a nanny to keep the baby out of sight and out of mind? Hiring Echo seems odd and creepy especially when (presumably) given some of his wife's memories. (Assuming from her mentioning the honeymoon) Speaking of which... how is he explaining Echo's presence to said friends and family of either himself or his deceased wife? Surely if her family were around they'd be even more interested in this baby due to her death? There's so much "huh?" to this engagement like most of the non-prostitution jobs. I feel like they do these engagements to prove "Hey! Look! There's other things to hire a doll for then a really customizable prostitute!" When in actuality that's all a doll would probably be used for by the clients at least.
If I was DeWitt I would have Echo wiped completely and maybe even put in the attic. Why do they keep sending her out on these assignments when she is obviously glitching? Must be bad for business, can't see the husband recommending the Dollhouse to any of his friends. I thought the acting was terrible too. It sounded like November was reading off cue cards the whole time. But I'll watch next week.
Denisoff's wife is definitely a doll. I wasn't sure if his accent was slipping or if I was just imagining him speaking with an accent since all I've ever seen him in is Angel. I also thought something had happened to the wife to send him a message. I half expected a couple of silenced gun shots, then the sound of her body hitting the floor.
What was Sierra's role? This seemed lik a pretty low level assignment, why assign a second doll unless Dichen Lachman is contractually obligated to appear in a certain number of episodes?
I disagree with you on the Nate thing. He seemed genuinely uncomfortable around Echo and I thought it was fairly obvious that he had hired her as a stand in for a missing wife.
@Dr Emilio Lizardo: the senator's wife is almost certainly a doll. she seems to be the same personality they gave november. supportive but passively discourageing.
i think sierra was supposed to be an anchor for echo's personality. but i rolled my eyes during the scene in the park when they were talking to one another. it felt like a worthless waste of time since neither people were 'real' and we could get the insecure housewife crazy without it.
nate seemed creeped out by the situation more than anything. i think he did it to try to nurture the child he couldn't but then realized just how off putting the whole thing was.
and yeah they need to accelerate top the end game, the epitaph portion of the proposed arc already. we get the creepy implications of the technology now bring it to a head.
@GreyHammer: Did Nate have to pay extra for Sierra as the Best Friend? It seems a waste of a valuable asset to use an active for a task a backup handler could do.
Sorry guys, but the logic of this episode really bothered me. What was the planned outcome of this engagement with Echo? Was she supposed to raise the kid for the next 18 years so she could bond with it and then they would fake her death so she could go back to the Dollhouse? How did they ever intend to get Echo out of that engagement after the child had "bonded" with her without the child suffering the trauma of loosing its mother?
It just made no sense even if everything had worked out as planned. This show is going down hill fast.
I know what you mean about the HD cameras. Some scenes look weirdly unfocused, probably because they shot them in HD, and then zoomed in on one area to get a tighter "shot" without reshooting anything. It's a minor thing, though.
@ElimGarak: Using digital cameras instead of film makes no difference. Just like with film, it's about the lighting, and how your process your footage in post production that matters.
So if something is off, it's because the crew needs to adjust in the new realities and tools.
@Eugenia: Ah, so it is just a question of removing some steps in the process? Was the old method film-digital-digital editing, and the new one HD-digital editing?
I thought it was interesting to finally see some low-level functionaries in the Dollhouse. We've got a Madam, security, handlers, doctor, Topher (et alia)... but not a janitor or an orderly in sight. Or at least not on-camera and in-focus.
My understanding is that Denisof is actually American and he just got really good at doing a British accent from living in England for a while. So, his American voice just sounds weird because we're so used to him as Wesley! (I can never buy James Marsters as an American, either. Even though he's from America, he has a voice like an English person doing a so-so American accent.)
I thought all the thunder and lightning stuff at the end was a really bad choice. It pushed a dramatic situation over the edge into melodrama, it was hard to take seriously.

No way we get a third season at this rate.
