As with the Donnie Darko interactive web site, The Box web site has hidden gems hidden on it as well -- including a PDF of the comic and the manual! [thebox-movie.warnerbros.com]#richardkelly
I find it shocking that you'd call Southland Tales a critical failure and you haven't seen it. Most reviews I read acknowledged that the film is ambitious and messy. But also acknowledged that it is brilliant.
I found Southland Tales brilliant. It's like being in a Jeremy Blake artwork. It's like a blog (intimate, dependent on the personalities behind it, image-driven, self-aware of how idiosyncratic it is). And it's a mess.
I loved Donnie Darko when it first came out, and when the Director's Cut was released I was pushed into going on a bad date and found I liked it even better. Easily one of the best science fiction films of our time, and that's saying something considering how much I hate time travel.
For the second time today io9 has inspired me to see something- I hope you're as wrong about Southland Tales as you are about DD.
By the way 4ndreVV, you're totally right about Speed Racer- it was mostly for kids, but as such it was great fun.
@John Hazard: For the record, I make no statement of quality regarding Southland Tales - I'd say its insanity is acknowledged and either decried or celebrated by pretty much everybody. It actually sounds like the sort of awesomely lunatic film that I tend to enjoy. And I do understand the reasons why a lot of people love Donnie Darko so much and think they're all perfectly legitimate - it just didn't do very much for me.
@4ndreVV: so can anyone explain to me what was up with the rock? Was he suppose to be some type of anti-christ? also what was up with bi ling?
i don't know what i think of the movie. I think the biggest mistake was the stunt casting of former SNL types in the roles. Nothing destroys the "suspension of disbelief" then seeing the church lady in a serious scene.
I don't know the original story or TV episode, so it's bewildering to me how a movie about a button that kills a random stranger can require 300 effects shots. I'm curious.
@Aler: I think it lies somewhere in the translation from short story/half-hour long TV episode to two-hour movie. Here's hoping all the other ninety minutes of it is non-stop space battles and talking car chases!

"I'm a pimp and pimps don't commit suicide"
"Scientists are saying the future is going to be more futuristic than they originally predicted"
Where else do you get dialogue like this?
