I don't know... I think that Shatner would've made some new fans feel like he was "forced" upon them, but at the end credits I know that they left a memorial credit to both Gene and Majel, and personally I'd have rather heard her voice, as a last tribute to the wonderful work she did over the years.
@heystartrek: Yep. In fact, I'm pretty sure she's done all the Trek computer voices for awhile now. And as little as the computer has to say and with voice synthesizer technology continuing to improve (in case they decide they need some new lines from the computer), I'd be surprised if she doesn't continue to be that voice for at least this series of films.
Technically, Kirk (and a few others) are in "the string" which is supposed to be outside time. Someone can go in there to pull them out as many times as we want to bring them back for whatever reason.
It's worth pointing out that nobody actually remembers the plot of Generations, so Shatner-Kirk could easily be reintroduced in a future movie. Then again, most under 30s know him best as the excitable pudgy spokesperson for Priceline.com, so maybe T.J. Hooker: The Golden Years would be a better career avenue.
TOS Kirk can still make a cameo in the next movie, and I'm sure they'll all come to an agreement by that time.
As for all those people who say Kirk is dead cuzza Generations... not anymore! The writers fiddled with time travel and history-changing events so anything is possible now... so Kirk may never get involved with Generations which averts his death... thus new timeline future-Kirk has the opportunity to visit his past self: new timeline Chris Pine Kirk... we just have to forget all about TOS.
That's not how it works. Whatever happened in Spock Prime's "reality" happened the way we know it happened. The stuff that's been altered is in an "alternate reality"...
Sylar Spock will never grow up to become the same Spock that Nimoy played. They're two seperate realities. Somewhere out there, the old Star Trek continuity still exists, should someone ever want to do something with it in the future.

Anything is cooler with Shatner.
He could make a Uwe Boll film great.
