I'll bet that these talks started when Disney acquired Pixar. With Zemeckis's motion capture background, bet on a 2D vs 3D vs real world plotline leaning heavily on Pixar cameos just like the last one was promoted using classic 2D cameos.
I'll also bet that that's where the wheels come off as Lasseter won't let him use Pixar's characters.
Doesn't Stop Motion defeat the entire purpose of the movie? The charm of the original was the iconic 2d cartoon characters interacting with real people.
Not to mention only a few animation directors/studios can pull off stop motion to that it is a cinematic quality, and Stop Motion against 2d would probably look like shit.
Worst idea of the week Award needs to be presented to Zemeckis. Who then should be promptly bitch slapped by Jessica Rabbit.
@braak: Agreed. I find it really disturbing to look at.
I have to change the channel whenever I see ads for A Christmas Carol (2009). Never took the kids to Polar Express either, they didn't want to see it anyway. #rogerrabbit
I'd feel a lot better if Zemeckis had said "The reason why we didn't do a sequel 20 years ago was that we didn't have a story worthy of bringing these characters back, that would be in any way as good as the original. We've got one now, and we're confident it's going to be great!"
Rather than "Hey, that motion capture sure is neat! Those writer chaps can hammer something out. Let's make a movie!" #rogerrabbit
@Jonny_eh: Actually, Spoelberg was originally going to do stop-motion. They had to do tons of tests in pre-production to decide what medium was most appropriate. You know, like a responsible artist and director would do.
Zemekis, however, is not responsible, and at this point I'd even be willing to say he's not an artist. He IS a director, just a horrible, horrible one. #rogerrabbit
@dirtybacon: Apparently he has devoted his life to travelling around the internet switching around all the thens and thans.
Damn him anyways! #rogerrabbit
@dirtybacon: I took a solemn oath only just this morning to clean up the internet then/than scourge by nightfall.
Believe it or not, I'm almost done!

@Belabras ate my dingo!: That would be interesting to see. Fortunately, yeah, they're keeping her 2-D. I've seen some greatJR costumes...but bringing her into any sort of reality sort of takes away from her awesomeness. #rogerrabbit
A sequel is a terrible idea anyway, because you KNOW they'll just use CGI all the way through instead of filming the sequel the right way...the way that respects the heart, artistry, soul, and passion of the original filmmakers.
You know, I think we need some sort of Sequel/Remake Board of Approval. Something like the giant judging heads from Superman. You stand in the circle and pitch an idea as crappy as that, and they start shouting "art crime! guilty! GUILTY!" and off you go to the Phantom Zone, never to trouble the populace with your crappy-ass Will Smith-based remake schemes ever again.
There is no way any sequel of WFRR will hold a candle to the original.
Why?
1) Real-life puppeteers handled all of the "real" elements the toons held and interacted with (guns, flying bar stools, etc.), which made those characters infinitely more lifelike. Nowadays, CGI would take the place of this human element, because it's easier and cost-effective. And it would be to the sequel's detriment.
2) There's no way you'll ever again see Warner Bros. and Disney cartoons sharing the same screen real estate. I remember press coverage at the time the original movie was released saying just that.
3) I also remember from some of the press coverage at the time WFRR was released that some considered it to have racist overtones. I don't believe/see it, but there ya go. The kind of content in the original would never get greenlit today. Instead, we'd have some milquetoast caper plot that would not rise to the level of the original.
@Now With More Bob!: The charge of racist overtones come from the parallels between the way 'toons are treated in Roger Rabbit's alternate world and the way black performers were treated in the real Hollywood. For instance, when Eddie Valiant goes to the Ink and Paint Club, he is told that it is "Toon review...strictly humans only." The owners are more than happy to have toons work and perform in the club but they aren't allowed to come in as customers. This is similar to historical clubs such as the Cotton Club in which blacks were hired as performers and even wait staff but never allowed to come in as customers. And for all its vibrant imagery, Toon Town is little more than a ghetto on par with real ghettos such as Harlem or Chinatown.
I think that Hoskins is saying that he CAN'T do a sequel because he's too old, not that he doesn't WANT to. He figures that he won't be able to keep up physically.
But what if Zemeckis can come up with a script that contrasts Eddie Valiant's advancing age with Roger Rabbit's perpetual youth? Or maybe 2-d Roger being replaced by 3-d toons, and feeling just as old as Eddie?
As long as Hoskins isn't replaced by Jack Black, and we don't get the dead eyes from Polar Express, we're good.

Oh yeah, I agree with @PlaidNinja - no Ashton, no Mac guy, no Twilight'ers, and I'll put in one more: no Paris Hilton-style stunt casting.

Good point. So no 3-d if it's set in the 50s or 60s.
