The Future Of Science Fiction Publishing Is In Cyberspace |

The blogs I visit are either news blogs (like i09) or content driven sites. I don't care how much I love an author, I don't give a darn if he's doing a signing three states away. If he has free stuff on his website, I'm there for the free stuff and I ignore the news posts entirely.
If you're going to build a community of fans, it's because you're giving them something they don't get elsewhere, and it has to be something they actually want.
Whether that translates into book sales is a whole other issue. Just because you're a great blogger, that doesn't convince me you can write fiction. So how do you make that jump? I think giving away free short stories is a great place to start, but it's only a beginning.

OTOH, it means I get to keep winning arguments with you. ;) And tell you to put on a sweater when it's cold outside.

Wait...which 80s were we talking about again?

Esther Dyson was saying something similar, in the far blunter, colder tones that one might expect, early in the '90s.
