Sounds good to me, I love this sort of stuff. And if she's a bad detective ? Even better. I'm tired of books which assume anyone can take on the detective trade and be great at it. Being a detective takes training, experience and hard work, it ain't enough just to choose to do it (like the athletes who when they retire say "I'll go become an actor.")

The writing on this is rather horrible. Got an advanced copy through a bookstore friend and it's so incredibly ham-fisted in its exposition I could barely finish the damn thing. The opening chapters (October's job at the grocery store, et al) for instance were so hackneyed and insincere I was convinced McGuire had never worked a blue collar gig in her life and was just faking it as best she could.

On a separate note, the obligations and Faerie magic very much remind me of White Wolf's Changeling: The Lost.

@Now With More Bob!: Adrian Monk was my first thought as well. I just can't think there'd be enough wipes in the city for him to ever leave his apartment in this version of San Francisco.

You know, this reminds me so much of Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series.

The main character has human blood in her which makes her somewhat mortal in the realms of the Faerie world and despite being of royal lineage, shes somewhat a pariah.

So she disappears into the human world to work as a detective until shes being hunted down by her own kind.

That plus the amount of suitors in her life and responsibilities and plight she has to face being a Fey. It's hard not to draw any comparison between the 2 books.

@Kamigoroshi: This is exactly what I thought too.

I didn't like the Merry Gentry books (or at least the first one, I didn't even get more than half way through) so I'm not sure I would like this either.

@Mark Lewis: I wonder if this would work? Lead works because it's the right mix of solidity and malleability. Too brittle or soft (like wood, silver, or carbon), and bullets fly apart when they leave the barrel. Too strong (like steel) and they eventually wreck the barrel. I'll have to ask my reloading buddies about this.

(I think a usable vampire or werewolf round might be a standard copper-jacketed lead hollowpoint with a wood or silver core tapped into the center.)

@Chip Overclock: IIRC, there are copper-jacketed lead bullets with steel cores already available. Sutibly OCD bullet designers could create a layered system, with a Pyrex core containing holy water, inserted in a wooden sleeve, jacketed in silver, with a lead /copper outer jacket.

@Chip Overclock: The lead is used as a core more for its mass then anything else. Copper Jackets are used as they conduct heat well enough not to melt while being softer then the steal barrel.

Charlie, have you read the Felix Castor stuff by Mike Carey yet? I haven't yet, but am hearing good things. I know you like hard-boiled, Carey is supposed to be the real deal.
I've been pretty unimpressed by most of Urban Fantasy noir/crime thing, a lot of it is pretty lame. Sorry, Jim Butcher.

Wizards in trenchcoats etc. is becoming more popular, so really good writers are bound to emerge. Sturgeon's Law and all that; if the sample increases the 10% that ain't crap will increase too, right?

@Grey_Area: I've only read the first book in the series. If you can make it past the first half it's a good read. It kind of drags along and is awkward in parts. Castor isn't a likable protagonist. I really liked a couple of Carey's comics, Lucifer and Crossing Midnight, and wanted to like this. The last half saved it and I'll pick up the second book but it's low on the reading list.

@Grey_Area: The reason I started reading the Dresden Files is actually because of the silly fun. The series was actually my bounce back after reading about 30 Discworld books in a row, leaving my aching for something funny and fantastical. I love Harry's wisecracks and some of the ridiculous ways he gets out of some situations.

Strangely enough, I couldn't get into the Nightside after finishing the first book because for something so ridiculous it seemed to take itself too seriously. So there ya go *shrug*.
