I'm sorry, NINE PICTURES?! Am I the only one who read this and thought, "Whoa whoa whoa whoa. That's WAY too many." I like SLJ, I really do, but that's going to over saturate the character (and the actor) beyond all comprehension.
@Chris R: Well, does the bit part in "Iron Man" count as one? I mean, is he slated to appear in nine movies ABOUT Nick Fury, or is he slated to appear in nine movies in which Nick Fury might be an ancillary character?
@crashedpc : ゴキブリ and 蟑螂 division: And, you know. At the end of the article, they mention that Jackson signed a 9-picture deal with Marvel to portray Nick Fury for a shit ton of movies.
@Miksho: Ahh, snap. I just got pwned on the Internet. Oh boy.
If he makes money off of the first few movies, I'm sure he'll keep doing them. What's to stop him from breaching contract and paying whatever fines they impose on him in order to get away from whatever pap they decide to film him in?
@TemporalSword: He's not going to be any worse than, say, the Hoff, right?
I just hope the delivery of his lines don't come down again to the level they did in the Star Wars prequels. Good lord, it was like listening to a high school play.
@Twisk: I'm pretty sure that whole thing was scripted and directed as a high school play. Nobody came off well.
And I have it on good authority that Liam Neeson, Sam Jackson, Ewan McGregor, Keira Knightley, and Natalie Portman all actually have an observable amount of acting ability outside of the SW universe.
no f sam jackson hes so fucking over rated, all he does is yell and rant, im sorry but you need a little bit more of a complex actor to play nick fury not by much but a little more, not to mention historically (and im not racist by any means) but furys not black...i dunno when i saw him in iron man i was just disappointed I mean were giving the guy who did snakes on a plane as the top dog in shield...i just dont like it
@gaming09: He's a great actor, but he's fallen in the same very profitable trap as Nicholson, Pacino, Walken etc. Most people love watching him play some variation of Jules Winfield and he's made a good career out of having a lot of fun punching snakes and yelling at people.
That said, he can totally play Nic Cage in a calm commanding manner, as he did in the 2 seconds of screen time he had in Iron Man. Hell just go rent XXX he's basically Nick Fury in that. Limited yelling and commanding presence, leaving aside the film's quality.
I'm afraid that in that particular day and age, it would have been utterly impossible for George Lucas to release anything remotely resembling what we had built it up to be. I-M-possible. It was our Holy Grail of sci-fi prequel/sequels. I think it humanly impossible to produce a movie that would have lived up to my expectations.
I will also add... trailers. Trailers have changed UH-LOT since way back. In fact, I've started the practice of trying to avoid any information at all (except the title of course), of upcoming attractions and had some fairly astonishing results. I mean... they're not just teasers these days, they're all the best parts of the friggin' movie! It's as if all they care about is getting you to buy the one ticket (imagine that) - so they blow the whole wad on a tiny minute of mind blowing sensory input, probably to compete with the other sensory info slamming us day in and out, and hoping you think - "Oh man!! That looks awesome!! I'm goin' to see that!!" when in reality, you've just seen all the best parts. Tried it with Episode 2 - didn't see ONE bit of ONE trailer (yes, it was a great test in self control and media avoidance as well,) LOVED THE MOVIE. Try it on one of the upcoming sequels. You'll see. It's no guarantee by any means, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
@avconsumer2: I agree that it would have been nigh unto impossible for him to live up to everyone's expectations.
I do not agree that it would have been nigh unto impossible to substantially improve upon the movies he ended up making. There are some simple, more or less objective principles he failed to observe.
The Quentin Tarantino reference was way off. Tarantino had already had flops by 99. Four Rooms in particular which came out just a year after Pulp Fiction.
@Blake Shafer: Through '97, he had Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown under his belt. Then he did nothing until 2003, when Kill Bill came out, and that movie was good, but, I would argue, did not hold so much in the way of stylistic surprises for anyone who'd seen a Quentin Tarantino movie before.
And Four Rooms doesn't really count because (1) he was one-fourth of a director on that movie (that was the whole point) and (2) it was more or less an art-house film, not made as a financial blockbuster. (As for the quality of the movie, I thought it was pretty good.)
I remember signing petitions, and saying I would boycott the first Daniel Craig Bond film. Of course, I ended up watching it twice at the cinema in the first week - Don't believe the hype!!!
@Moff: Forming a Rock Band takes years of dedication, practice, and hard work. Do you think that the Brian Setzer Orchestra, this year's Grammy winner for best pop performance, achieved the kind of staying power they will obviously enjoy for the next few decades simply by purchasing a guitar in a box?

Ohoho, so confident in their ability to retain Samuel L Jackson for more than Iron Man 2.

Other than the fact that I love him as an actor, I think he'll bring something great to these roles. :)
