In reply to Lessons Joss Whedon Can Bring Back To Dollhouse From Glee
Oh God, not Glee. I HATE Glee and its cast with a passion. Every time I see those grinning faces, I want to shoot someone, anyone.

Dollhouse needs to learn from Whedon's older work, period. Not from this musical atrocity. All those points mentioned there, Buffy and Angel had in spades most of the time. #dollhouse

I love Glee! I agree Dollhouse has pacing issues. I wouldn't speed it up quite as fast as Glee!, I think that it actually is a bit too fast, but a happy medium would be wonderful. I would certainly like them to dump the misadventure of the week format and start progressing toward the grim future of Epitaph1. I honestly wonder if that isn't going to be a difficult story to tell.

When Fox said they would air all 13 episodes of Dollhouse, they did say they would almost certainly pull it during sweeps, so that's not a shock.

I also agree that a villain who goes with it and enjoys the evil can really be a nice change from all the reserved evil and emo evil we've seen lately. That's the main reason I'm riveted by Vampire Diaries: Ian Somerhalder's character is just (no pun!) gleeful in his evil, yet he has nuances.

Perhaps they can hire Jane Lynch as the ultimate Rossum Corporation big bad. #dollhouse

Dollhouse just needs to go back to the stronger ongoing narrative it had near the end of S1, and get far away from the "brain of the weak" formula. #dollhouse

"I want it on my desk, warm from the laminator, at 5 pm. If it is one minute late I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love with that kitty cat. And then on some dark, cold night I will steal away into your home and punch you in the face."

Whedon needs whoever wrote this on staff. And yeah, Jane Lynch too.

Everyone in the Dollhouse being a victim of circumstance is lame. Ray Wise would be ok, he was a decent The Devil, but I really want Summer Glau to be the Big Bad. #dollhouse

And I agree. Summer Glau playing a bad guy hasn't been done since The 4400, and even there she was just a conflicted schizophrenic with superb mental abilities. #dollhouse

Honestly, this week's Glee was the first one I didn't actively dislike since the pilot. Jane Lynch is great, but Sue is a one-note character. Musical numbers are great, but the actual music is so overproduced for sale on iTunes that I can't actually enjoy the numbers. And while I can appreciate the camp and the tongue-in-cheek-ness of it all... you've got to give me some sincerity every once in a while. #dollhouse

i love Glee! i just started catching it on Hulu (SGU too) so i missed the first two episodes. but i agree with how fast they go through plot lines. i was just thinking about that today actually. at first i found it offputting, but you know, it makes me excited- because soon, all the obvious plots will be run though; i like how they took care of the 'dad i'm gay' plot in what, 1.5 episodes? that there could have been 3 seasons of 'dad i'm-- taking out the trash!' 'dad, i have to tell you, i'm g--oing over to pete's!' if this were say... Smallville. #dollhouse

    Glee is fun.

So if Whedon did think that being left out of November sweeops was the end, would he say so?

"Oh, my little show is screwed, it's dying. FOX has left it off sweeps so it is definitely not coming back."

Yeah, I can't see him saying that. #dollhouse

Great article Charlie. Dollhouse could use a dose of Glee (and Buffy, and Firefly, and pretty much everything else Joss has created) exactly for the reasons you've stated.

Glee actually reminds me of his Buffy take on High School minus the hellmouth. An ensemble cast representing a motley crew of kids on the bottom of the social food chain banding together. Satire galore, dark humor, plenty of quirky dialog. And we all know Sue Sylvester could have easily been a Big Bad. #dollhouse

@disatess: What does that even mean? Is "all this weak crap" the ideas Whedon has been exploring in making a so-so show like Dollhouse, or are you referring to Whedon directing an episode of Glee? And you can't just say "Do something else like Serenity/Firefly. That shit be epic," as if we have any idea what thing in Firefly you're referring to. It might help if you explained what you think was a strong point of Firefly, and that Whedon should try something in that vein again.
Really, it won't kill you to speak with more clarity. You don't have to talk like an 8 year-old boy just because this is the internet. #dollhouse

@Kishi: Thanks for not getting in a slap fight here.

I agree with you though, Dollhouse has a great "Idea" but poor execution, which is probably equally blamed on Fox, Joss and his wooded cast. Firefly was a far less imaginative idea (space as the wild west) but was executed far better.

Personally I think Whedon forgot that TV should be enjoyable every once in a while. Make us laugh, make us cry, make us try to figure out something. Just making us watch leads to boring tv/ #dollhouse

Dianna Agron is one of the most beautiful actresses I have ever watched. I won't gush any more than that but she is very pretty and her character is one of the reasons I love watching Glee for. Dollhouse could definitely use a bit more Glee, and you know what I have never really thought about the pacing of Glee's plots until now. Dollhouse could use more of that speed and plots that you know will go through the season and not get stale and through some new shit in there just to fuck with us a bit, like Shue and Sue doing Swing, it was totally out of left field, and then everything was normal+ by the end of the ep. #dollhouse

Personally, I think Dollhouse utterly resists the camp that is Glee. It is dark subject matter and I think Glee-ing it up would be bad. I'm trying to find fun and whimsy in the cabal of mind-raped corporate whores. Not so much.

However, I do think that Dollhouse could really benefit from the way Glee has been marketed. It's got great viral, there are pop culture tie-ins left and right, there have been almost 2 million song downloads from iTunes with only 7 episodes into its first season. Glee is a show that works its ass off to get the word out. Dollhouse shows up, broods, then sulks that no one pays attention to it. (emo!)

That said, Glee knows exactly what it wants to be and pursues its identity vigorously. Dollhouse is still wobbling around trying to find itself. Tough to sell a concept you're not 100% sure of.

I also, squee! I am so glad I am not the only one who loves Glee on this site. #dollhouse

@Eridani: Wow, that's exactly right: GLEE has a goal, which it pursues relentlessly, safeties off, no holds barred. It feels to me like all the actors in it totally commit to their roles. Plus, it reminds me of BUFFY in that it delivers messages that I can totally get behind. I know it sounds stupid, but when the quarterback told his coach that as a leader he had the responsibility to see a better future, and the future he saw was one in which people were free to be what they wanted to be, I was inspired. And I'm not kidding. #dollhouse

I love musicals. Except for all that crappy singing and dancing. To be honest, you really would have to give me large sums of money to watch people do "numbers" to crappy Beyonce songs. That clip lasted seconds before the mighty clicking finger descended to smite it in the name of not hucking up dinner. If this is the best show on your TV I'd suggest getting a new TV. #dollhouse

The last direction I want Dollhouse going is in the direction that Glee is going. I love the musical bits, and the "Sue" character, but other than that I really can't stand the show. The plot isn't engaging, the other characters are all flat and annoying, and it doesn't even promote positive messages. Whedon uses clever humor that is heartwarming or heartwrenching and the truth is I don't get either emotion from Glee. Ever. #dollhouse

If HOUSE M.D. is science fiction, then GLEE is, I dunno, maybe urban fantasy. That way, if io9 covered GLEE, then I wouldn't have to go all the way over to Gawker to comment on my favorite show.

Yeah, that's right. Get over it.

And not to go totally ballroom nerd on y'all, but I'm even giving them a pass on having Emma and Will waltz to "I Could Have Danced All Night", which is most certainly _not_ written in 3/4 time.

While GLEE is on its break, I'll imagine Sue Sylvester giving me the discipline I both want and need. She'll "haunt my dreams".

    That's how _I_ "C" it. #dollhouse
