<![CDATA[There Is An American Idol 2012 Music Video. No, Seriously]]> Words do not even begin to express my confusion and sick, splodey delight. The runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol, Adam Lambert (Yes, the Goth kid), has made a 2012 music video. It's him walking through explosions, naturally.

Where do I even start with this ridiculous yet brilliant blend of marketing hype? The title of the song is, "Time For Miracles," and while I'm not a huge fan of the song, you gotta love the idea behind blending the world's most hyped-up show and Roland Emmerich. Its mostly Adam walking through disaster porn and waving his arms. Because nothing says love ballad like watching your family flung into the mouth of a volcano. It shows a lot of movie footage, but this is crazy. All I have to say is, where were you Clay Aiken, with your The Day After Tomorrow music video? Can't you imagine the running with the wolves and frost sequence? That's eyeliner guy one, Aiken zero.

Thank you for pointing this out, Videogum.

<![CDATA[Trent Reznor Makes Fringe Even Creepier]]> Nine Inch Nails frontman and all-around rock god Trent Reznor is remixing his own "Zero-Sum" for J.J. Abrams' Fringe. And in keeping with the show's nerd-overload, the whole thing is full of geeky Easter Eggs and hard core Fringe references.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Reznor will be mixing William Bell's on screen dialogue with his 07 track "Zero-Sum," voiced by Leonard Nimoy, naturally. Reznor became involved when Fringe used a clip of his song in a previous promo, and was reached out to, to see if he would be interesting in collaborating even more. But the real question here is, will Reznor make a cameo on Fringe? I'd like to see him as an observer or a before-the-title "freak of the week." Series exec producer Jeff Pinkner told EW:

"If he wants to come act on the show, that's not tit for tat — that's an open invitation, and we made that known to him," says Pinkner. Any ideas on what he may play? "Well, his head would probably end up exploding," deadpans Pinkner. "There'd be some uncomfortable biology in there one way or another."

Here's a sneak peek of Reznor's official promo and the entire thing will air Thursday during the American League Championship Series.

<![CDATA[Tomorrow's Must-See Mind-Frak Music Videos, Today]]> With the Wild Things soundtrack being released and the Admiral Ackbar song contest underway, it's high time we stopped and paid attention to a few other note-worthy and science-fictional musician. Here's our round-up of futuristic and mind-expanding music videos.

It's not terribly hard to find an overlap between science fiction and new tunes in this digital age, with bands throwing out synth beats, blips and laser light shows left and right. We've talked about how Alien Princess Rihanna and her lady-in-waiting GaGa have gotten in on the action, along with Felicia Day and Janet Jackson.

But we wanted to point out a few new videos worth noting that you may have missed over the hot summer months. Here are the best new music videos that include, but are not limited to, extreme displays of wormholes, swirling cosmic vistas, holograms, psychedelia and 1980s revivalism. Feel free to add your favorites so far this year as well.

First up let's talk about that song competition over at Buzz Grinder. If you can write and record a song about Admiral Ackbar and puppies you can win:

  • free shirts
  • CDs
  • Records
  • Hand Made Crochet Cupcakes
  • and 4 Cents

Represent, readers — this a worthy challenge, because puppies and Ackbar are an awesome, yet unlikely, combination. It's not a trap!

"Black Swan" by Sunset Rubdown

In this first video from their new album Dragonslayer, the tirelessly creative and cryptic Canadian outfit gives us a video complete with futuristic landscapes, shooting stars, Rorshach inkblot tests, skeletons in outer space and lead singer Spencer Krug's signature warbling melodies.

"Tooth Decay" by Black Moth Super Rainbow

A cartoon skull drifts out of the troposphere in an endless trajectory past winged beasts and space cities as psychadelic synths and vocoders mesh, in the weirdly startling way only BMSR can do it.
"For the Planet Pluto" by The Music Tapes

Indie rock loves the underdog, so who better than the Music Tapes (and a ragtag group of local youngsters) to eulogize the poor demoted planetoid in this video, complete with a walking painting of Pluto, a grumpy astronomer and a support group for obsolete scientific objects?
"Do You" by Portugal The Man

"Do You" get creeped out by Portugal's zombie face operation table? Did not see this trippy space-surgery video getting paired with the wavy guitar of "Do You"? Aw look, he's got space sand in his ballet flat.
"Standing on the Shore" by Empire of the Sun

Empire Of The Sun isn't exactly our favorite band, but this August video is worthy of attention, for the swordfish girls alone. That said, their latest music video release Without You is channeling Labyrinth-era Bowie a bit too hard. Still we love those blue ladies, and the fever dreams that they haunt.

"Basic Space" The xx

With plodding electro beats, a bored, slightly lisping female singer, and chiaroscuro shots of the band members are saved by the weird tricks of light that make band members look like human incarnations of the Tron lightcycle.

"Automatic" by Tokio Hotel

The German Rock group forces together Mad Max and The Transformers — yes, the bad rip-off movie — for their latest video. I can't find an embeddable youtube, but really that's okay, because the best part is the HUMANOID ring the main character is sporting in the futuristic wasteland, and the big robot kiss in the end, pictured here.

"Kids" by MGMT

Sure it's a bit old, and a lot bit played out, and I'm not the biggest MGMT fan at all, but this video is undeniably rad. Whether it's creepy puppets gyrating in front of Windows 98 screensaver-worthy backgrounds, animation that looks like it was drawn by the creators of Jem and the Holograms, or definite evidence of baby harassment, it's pretty spectacular to watch. Plus monsters making babies cry will always bring a smile to our shriveled hearts.

"The Open Happiness" by Cee-lo

I want to live in Cee-lo's world, where everyone can play with spotted elephants and singing zebra people.

"Mirror Error" by The Faint

I thought I liked The Faint a lot way back in high school. I still can't figure out why. They're pretty much up to their old tricks in this video, but at least they're consistent, with their affection for collage techniques both in their music and visuals and their penchant for darkness, distortion and assembly-line imagery.

<![CDATA[The Best And Worst Of Virtual Music Video Worlds]]> Who can forget Jeremy London's virtual cigarette, after having fake sex with Alicia Silverstone to Aerosmith's "Amazing"? Some of the best and worst virtual world-building has come from the music video industry. Strange virtual music worlds, we salute you.

The Good:

Radiohead - "House of Cards"
Virtual Thom Yorke head? Yes please. Geometric Informatics and Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR was used to create this gorgeous virtual head.

Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes.

Making Of The Radiohead Video

Aha - "Take On Me"
A classic virtual comic-book world of black and white.

Michael Jackson - "HIStory"
A virtual world full of Michael Jackson videos? Count me in, but only if I get to dance with King Eddie Murphy from ""Remember the Time."

Michael Jackson - HIStory (The video)
by JamesBottleOfSmoke

Dire Straits, "Money For Nothing"
This block-headed virtual world makes me yearn for the simpler days when MTV actually played music videos, including a computer generated world that made the cast from Reboot look impressive.

Röyksopp - "Remind Me"
A breakdown of the real world through a virtual one? Brilliant.

Remind Me from Röyksopp on Vimeo.

The So Bad It's Kind Of Good

Infernal - "From Paris to Berlin"
Annoying song, but a cute tribute to the virtual world of Tron. Don't listen for too long, or it will be burned into your brain for days.

Aerosmith - "Amazing"
Possibly the cheesiest virtual world ever built. Especially when the young boy has an accident on the computer, which ends up in his pants in the virtual world.

Flying Lotus - "Parisian Goldfish"
Directed by Eric Wareheim, from the insane Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
this heavy on the strange sex virtual world is NSFW and NS for your brain.

So what are your favorite (and least favorite) music-video virtual worlds?

<![CDATA[Bob Dylan Makes The True Blood Vamps' Clothes Fall Off]]> The latest True Blood promo spot is out, with all our favorite characters doing what they do best: getting naked and rolling around in blood. Watch the cast jump and jive to Bob Dylan.

Check it out: Eric got a hair cut. He's looking good with that short hairdo. I'm very antsy to see what happens with Alexander Skarsgård this season, as I think he was undercut a little last year, with tiny t-shirts and the likes. But this? This is lookin' both dangerous and hot. I'm also glad to see Jason on his knees, probably foreshadowing his big religious storyline for the season. Heck, its just good to have everyone back — we missed you, TB, and all your sexy blood play. The new season will start in June 14th.

The Dylan song is called "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'," and I have no idea if it will be replacing my beloved Jace Everett "Bad Things" title song. Which I've posted below, because it's delightful:

<![CDATA[Eminem's New Star Trek Music Video Takes A Bat'leth To Planet Womyn]]> It's been ages since Eminem decided to insult us all with a sexist, homophobic, celebrity skewing, Star Trek-referencing rap video. Em and Dre put their best Trekker faces forward, and beam up to planet lesbian.

Oh dear - looks like Eminem has decided to don the Vulcan wig to attack Samantha Ronson's planet of stereotyped butch lesbians, and put the Vulcan nerve pinch on Uhura. But not before turning into a big-breasted Transformer and zapping most of his crew, in his penis shaped ship. Hooray easy targets and "controversial" material! Say what you will about Eminem's not-so-subtle style at least he tries to make fun of himself while the rest of the world files for an injunction. Some of the video is a little too obvious and easy, ridiculously immature, some of it's funny, and other parts are just trying to get a rise out of you. Regardless if it pisses you off or makes you laugh, you gotta love seeing Dr. Dre in a captain's uniform in the "We Made You" video whilst EM tells all the reality TV trash and over hyped celebs to suck on a wood chipper.

<![CDATA[What Mutant Foe Will The Singing Spidey Face?]]> In a special sneak peek at the multi-million dollar Spider-Man musical, director Julie Taymor spilled details on sets, villains, and sky high web-slinging. Plus Bono and The Edge played a few tunes.

Modern Fabulosity was lucky enough to snag seats at the Broadway sneak peek at the Spidey musical, starring Evan Rachel Wood as Mary Jane Watson, and possibly this guy as Peter Parker.

According to Fab the New York City sets are a thing of beauty. Peter Parker's ballads are a lovely (a few songs were still a little too early to judge) but they're mainly a blend of both pop-rock from U2 and Broadway singing. But the big surprise was the villains. Apparently EVERYONE is involved:

Unlike Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films (which moved from the story's comic book roots toward a more naturalistic, real-world interpretation), Taymor is, unsurprisingly, going the other way — embracing the webcrawler's inherent theatricality, and placing him inside a stylized New York City populated with heroes and (multiple) supervillains.

Oh, and each baddie looks amazing:

Ishioka's costumes were breathtaking — a rogues gallery of the villains that appear onstage in the musical received audible gasps from the audience, including the Green Goblin, Lizard, Kraven, Swarm, and a new female villain created at the behest of Taymor, Swiss Miss (dressed in immaculate white dominatrix gear and multiple knives...hot!). Fans of Dr. Octopus and Sandman should know, however, that neither made an appearance in the presentation, although Taymor hinted at a special villain yet to be identified who appears in the piece.

It all sounds great, except for the idea of a dominatrix supervillain named Swiss Miss. (What's next - the vicious St. Pauli Girl?) The full report is back at Fab, but it sounds like Taymor's vision is being handled with the utmost care, along with a few Cirque du Soleil trainers who've taught the stuntman playing Spidey how to glide over the audience.

<![CDATA[Your New Battlestar Galactica Fan Anthem Is Here]]> Jonathan Mann writes a song a day, but his greatest achievement is sporting tiny shorts and rapping about BSG. Listen at your own risk because you will be singing this for the rest of time.

I love this silly song. It's burned in my brain, along with the image of Mann in his tiny shorts. The artist's daily youtube compositions vary wildly - some are okay, and, well, some are a sound trap that will have you singing "Cylon Ciiivil War" all day. I highly recommend his other songs titled "Zombie Ponies" and "Penguins Having A Party". Thanks for the tip, Paul!
