I read an ARC of Catching Fire, and it is badass. It's everything I could have hoped it would be.

It's also worth pointing out that Kirk came the closest to rejecting his "First, best destiny" [Spock, et al] in the first half or so of the first movie, with the major arc of the second half being the process of getting him back on track.

So, since that arc is technically already covered, trying to cover it again would just be awkward. And unnecessary, even if you insist on following the standard progression of hero plot arcs.

Instead of some hokey, over-the-top villain, I would rather see the next Star Trek adventure center around a natural phenomenon or cosmic disaster.

Seriously, that's like my second or third favorite TOS episode, after "Devil in the Dark" and possibly "Operation: Annihilate!".

I will be fine with whatever they want to do in the new Star Trek movies as long as they don't kill Kirk and bring him back again. I am getting so sick of that. It worked back in Search for Spock days but I am sick of it now. I guess Stargate Atlantis put the final nail in that coffin.

But.. Why would you even compare Star Trek and Transformers? They're two different animals. Plus Transformer's wasn't super in as many departments as Star Trek and Transformers 2 sucked!

Also, on the cliffhanger in between parts 2 and 3, I bet it's safer to not do so. Look at Pirates 2 and 3 and now the Dark Knight and its sequel.

With most of the fleet destroyed by Nero's vessel, We se a strong romulan Empire taking star systems while Kirk & Crew are the only defence...

Meanwhile the crew is too caught up in thier romances to notice.

@Random434: No this is how it will happen. The Romulins will take advantage of the power vacuum and try to conquer Earth and that will make Kirk and Scotty mad and they will build a big ass gun that will blow up Romulus and then the Nero thing would have never happened and the planet Vulcan would reappear with Winona Ryder on it safe and sound.

@EBone:Most of the fleet doesn't have to be destroyed. It just has to randomly go to the other side of the galaxy for no particular reason and stay there for the duration of the movie while the fate of the universe gets decided. Same as in the first movie. It's sent away just before each movie starts, and it can come back right after the credits roll.

Because it's Star Trek! Which, apparently, means it doesn't have to make any sense. As far as the people making these new movies are concerned, anyway. I mean, there's space ships and ray guns or whatever, what do we need a logical plot for?

Thank goodness they went right ahead with the other earths bit in Fringe. Can you imagine if they had waited? Folks would be calling shark jumping, others would have complained they'd watched from the beginning if they knew it was coming.

I'm glad that they're not going to follow the Transformers 2 formula! I don't like those "hero quits" stories. I can't wait for ST XII to come out in 2011.

In reply to Why Are Movie Threequels Always So Terrible?
The Star Trek 3-movie series is actually Wrath of Khan (II), Search for Spock (III), and Voyage Home (IV). While III was the weakest of the three, IV was still in the lead for box office receipts last time I looked. And it was a great fun film, after two really dark entries.

The first Phantasm movie was good.

The sequels on the other hand...

    P2, marred by studio interference.

    P3 (and P4), by Coscarelli's interference.
