On Supernatural, the Horsemen of the Apocalypse Drive Muscle Cars
Is "Supernatural" For Atheists?

So they're going with the God-as-woman angle, which is something I remember posting about with regard to the devil many months ago (the sexual dynamics could have been hilarious). The idea plays into the who "Earth Mother" concept as someone who gave birth to mankind rather than an old bearded guy who "created man in his image..."
The devil as sympathetic is something I've always jived with, which seems to bother many of my Mormon brethern (i'm currently non-practicing). Most of the demonizing of The Devil seems to be imposed upon us by the various Churches in power, like the Vatican, or my faith's HQ in Utah. While by no means a Biblical scholar, I don't ever remember reading that Lucifer was evil, especially before his fall. As an angel, he was plagued by a very "human" trait - pride, which is what led to being cast out. Nowhere does it say that he never regained his humility, it's just assumed that he doesn't because he lords over a rival kingdom.
Being the Tempter, it makes sense that he comes across as likable. As he leads folks to his kingdom, he has to sell the deal like a used car salesman. Being teh most beautiful angel in heaven, along with a charming personality, goes along way towards winning friends and influencing people.
Again, it's sounds like the writers are playing against the established conventions to give us something new and completely fresh. Just 6 more weeks....

I've always felt that by moving the show's action away from cities, Kripke and gang are able to play up the everyday mundane just like Hitchcock did with NORTH BY NORTHWEST and his famous cornfield scene. Where we should be our safest - those areas of middle-America where crime is a pale shadow of what occures in major metropolitans - we're really at our most vulnerable since we dont' expect evil to be lurker around the corner.

It's Revelation, by the way, Kripke.

Seriously, though, saying that God may or may not be male makes me think that maybe, just maybe, Anna might be God. I'd have to go through season four to see if there's anything that absolutely disproves this idea, but we'll see. Maybe the arch-angels staged a coup in Heaven and kicked God down to Earth.

I'm also excited for the Paradise Lost style portrayal of Lucifer. Much more interesting than just 'hes the devil which means he kills babies'...

Supernatural is one of the few shows that actually got better as it progressed.
Absolutely! I am continually astounded at what they can pull off. Everything that I think they've written themselves into a corner, or will have to default to lame reset or magic to solve something, or cannot /possibly/ handle the subject matter appropriately, they /do/. And they knock it out of the park.
I've been preaching word of this show to anyone who will listen. It's one of the smartest, wittiest, gutsiest, more creative, unique, entertaining, and outright scary shows I've ever seen.

Then there was Jake from All Hell Breaks Loose, and he killed our beloved Sammy -- but I don't think of Jake as a bad person, just as a flawed, confused one -- if I remember correctly, he came from a very impoverished family, and the YED promised him that his family would never want again if Jake helped him out.
Then there was Hendrickson, who was simply doing his job going after D&S, IMHO. He finally came around when he realized that D&S weren't criminals.
Am I forgetting any other prominent Black characters? There certainly aren't very many Black people on the show, but considering that it takes place mostly in the rural Midwest, I think that's to be expected? And let's get real -- there just aren't many Af-Ams on television period.
I truly do want hear about any racist patterns people have seen -- perhaps I just haven't been aware of them -- there's probably stuff I'm forgetting.

Oh man, I just remembered Uriel. But then there's also Rufus, and he's a completely sympathetic character if I remember correctly?

And the joke about Sarah Palin as president in the apocalypse? Priceless.

its more fun that way. it doesn't mean any care should be taken in respecting the source material though.
American Gods was pretty disrespectful to Odin, but no one got worked up about it. I think that fiction paints the characters of God and Angels as kind of dicks is that its pretty easy to do considering YHWH's track record.

Biblical angels had swords and people were terrified when they showed up.
