No, he can't have been gone for very long, because in the season premiere, we see Pierre Chang, preparing to film a DHARMA video, wake up and change his baby (Miles). In this episode, he said that his son was only 3 months old. After being interrupted from the video to go to the Orchid, he sees Dan there. Therefore, Dan was there at some point in the last 3 months, unless there is further time travel involved, which I don't think there is.

This episode was a great example of why I hate Kate. Once she figures out that she screwed up by talking to Roger about Ben, what does she do? Does she try to fix it? No, because that's what smart and capable characters like Sawyer, Juliet, Jack, etc would do - she instead gets that goddamn I-smell-poop look on her face and runs away. It's like a running gag or something! Seriously, die Kate.

Better question - Kate has been built up as a someone who could evade police for years, stage a bank robbery to get a toy and almost marry a guy, all while undercover. Yet as soon as she was off the island, she spills the "Big Lie" to not one but two different people. Neither of which she knew that well. Now she's running off at the mouth to another stranger.

If any of the O6 could be expected to keep a secret, it would be her. Yet it seems her character has gotten thrown off script.

@V.I.N.CENT: Actually, we've previously seen Kate be totally incapable of keeping information to herself EVEN WHEN ASKED to do that very thing explicitly. I seem to remember this happening in the days when Jack was the only lostie who trusted Juliet and Sayid asked her to keep something from him because he'd then share it with Juliet. I mean, it took her like 10 minutes. Seriously. She is maid of failure.

It's not that you have to be aware of all the weird fringe SF stuff. 'Empire' is kind of a requirement.

@Lynn Peril: You'll like Empire far better than the other films in the series. As a kid, I hated it; I would watch the first one and then skip right to Return of the Jedi. Same thing with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

When I grew up, I realized why both of those films were the greatest entries of their series; they're both dark and grim and completely unlike their bookending films.

@critifur: He rips a guys wind pipe out of he's neck. How can you not want to see that? When I become the lord protector of the world the 1st thing I'm doing is making every film studio make two movies a year that contain a wind pipe ripping scene.

I've never seen Roadhouse or Overboard. I do, however, own two copies of Empire on DVD, plus two on VHS. Er...make that three on DVD, since the Original Trilogy cut comes with a free copy of the most recent version of the Special Edition.
