    I was always rather found of the ship designs of Macross. The Zentraedi (or whatever spelling you what of the name) cruisers are in my mind the epitome of what a space battleship or cruiser should look like. And the level of firepower for that matter.

    I'm not sure if it could be included as io9's focus, but I think videogames could well be included in this. X-Wing and Tie Fighter had some fantastic designs, from the TIE defender to the T-wing and Z-95 headhunters. You've also got Wing Commander, Descent, Homeworld, and newer stuff like EVE Online to pick from.

    I also missed the Star Wars prequels in this. The jedi fighter with hyperspace ring was something I hadn't seen before. And I really liked the pre-Star Destroyer troop transports from Ep2, among other ships.

    @FuzzyHorror: Honestly, there could be and entire post devoted to just Star Wars or Trek. This is a little sample of everything.

    I've always considered the Romulan TNG era warbirds to be the most beautiful, if not impractical, ships designed in Star Trek.

    I never realised how advanced for its time the original Trek was in ship design. B5 and Farscape and Alien probably still remain favourites for design aesthetic.

    This is a good post with great insights into the pivotal moments in SciFi ship design and influence.

    The image gallery could use a little editing though: there are numerous duplicates and many of the images are similar enough to be redundant.

    @Ben Zvan: Sorry about that... I noticed a couple outright duplicates. Unfortunately it's really hard to edit galleries once they're up.

    I liked alot of this art, i always find the spaceship design interesting, but i'd never noticed how they've evolved like this! i did notice the change from sleek and shiney to the battered and lived in look during the Eighties.

    Also your "romulan Concept Art" (the ships over the bridge) are actually Chimera ships from Resistance 2

    Kinda wish this had some more ships from games and animation but i understand that would have made this probably last about 8 years.

    @Stueymon: Oh noes! Sorry about the "Romulan concept art" error. I wish we could fix it, but our gallery software makes editing picture titles and descriptions almost impossible once they're posted. And maybe we'll do a separate post on ships from games and animation sometime soon!

    Give me MOON ZERO TWO over SPACE COWBOYS any day. An utterly silly movie, of course, but it's silly with panache, only a degree or two off from being BARBARELLA. Arguably worth watching if only for Catherina von Schell getting down to her underwear.

    I still want to see "Event Horizon," even though people tell me it's the most disturbing movie ever, and it's also horribly bad, a disasterous combination.

    I think your totally off the mark with the original BSG, Buck Rogers and Starchaser. Sure they were a little campy but they were products of the times. When you discount the modern special effects, the original BSG is superior to the knock off in almost every respect. Just because the new version was gritty it doesn't make for a better series plus all the glaring holes and crappy ending makes it way worse that the original.

    @tekoneiric:

    You might be the only one who thinks that way. I loved BSG and Buck when I was a kid. I actually forked out money for the DVDs. To say they are good and have some sort of intellectual depth? No. Not even close.

    @ManchuCandidate: He's got good points:

    1. Dark 'n gritty isn't automatically better.

    2. the nuBSG effects will look just as bad in 30 years

    3. aiming at different audiences

    4. made in very different times for both the world and TV
