something that alot of people don't seem to realize evidently (with all the raimi hate for 3), is that, while yes, he was the director, it was the studio who 'suggested' that Venom be interjected into the mix, as they saw SM3 as the last outing, and wanted to 'go big' with a special effects bonanza (like that's anything new) #spiderman
You know what was even worse than having so many villains (as others have pointed out, it sometimes works)?
Too. Much. Wangst.
Seriously. Why did they have to revisit Parker's romantic troubles AGAIN? He doesn't have to win the girl in every single film. Why can't... you know... he just KEEP her and move on to other things?
If in Spider-Man 4 he breaks up and then makes up with Mary Jane AGAIN I'm going to be sorely disappointed. #spiderman
@Nivenus: that's what's kept spidy going in comics for 30+ years. angst. worry about dissapointing his aunt, losing his wife, having to choose between the path of least resistance and what he knows to be right. #spiderman
"I would agree with the criticism... I think [with Drag Me To Hell] I've learned about the importance of getting to the point and the importance of having limitations"
So is he saying DMTH was a good thing or bad? #spiderman
I know there isn't much to compare the two, but 'The Dark Knight' technically had 3 villains (scarecrow was in there, Two face and Joker) and that movie was amazing.
What it really comes down to is having a solid story that develops the villains right and good directing. Spider-man 3 fell short on both those things. Raimi doesn't have the scope as a director to handle a lot going on in a movie and neither did the people who wrote the script.
The Villain pairing was just wrong, the two didn't have a damn thing to do with each other and that hurt the overall effect of them pairing up at the end. Venom could have carried spider-man 3 himself, and should have, but they wasted him completely. Sandman was a joke that no one cared about and made matters worse by retconning what happened to Uncle Ben in the first movie. If they never made these mistakes, as well as never making Peter emo or dance, the movie would have been able to hold its weight fine. Also had Raimi not lost his mind and alienated a lot of the people who used to like working with him either during production of 2 and 3 things could have been different too.
Every thing about 3 was just wrong and its on good part Sam's mistake for allowing them to happen, same goes for the producers, that's why he's got to listen to that criticism. If he doesn't he won't have a career any more, I'm sure of it. #spiderman
@BoomingEchoes: Eh, your Dark knight parallel is pretty flawed. Saying it had three villains is a stretch. Scarecrow was more of a cameo than anything else.
In fact I would say that the dark knight failed in the fact that it tried to do two. Great movie, don't get me wrong. It all fell apart when they rushed two face though.
Its an underlying story flaw in any movie (Batman, Spiderman, anything else they try) when they start throwing too many bad guys in. #spiderman
@BoomingEchoes: i've personally heard Danny Elfman skirt around the subject of working with raimi in recent years. saying something along the lines of: "he's just not the same filmmaker he was a few years ago..." #spiderman
@tande04: if anything, any writer who attempts such a feat in forthcoming superhero movies should look to other genre films for examples of dynamics that work. you can't have two equal antagonists. one has to be the dominant threat, and the other(s) serve as tools of their wrath. now it doesn't have to be as straight forward as say X-Men 1, where Magneto had a whole stable of disposable sidekicks at his command, a good writer can disguise this construct effectivly, but there it is. #spiderman
I've said it once, and I'll keep on saying it until they announce the villain: for the love of all that is good in this universe, give us Bruce Campbell as Mysterio. Thank you. #spiderman
When I saw the preview for Spiderman 3, I knew right away it would be terrible because of villian overload, and no one believed me. Spiderman 2 was so good they said, look at Batman's movies I said. One villian is good more is bad. They said I was crazy, and I am, but I was right. #spiderman
I just saw Spiderman 3 for the first time last month and I remember I kept going "wait... ANOTHER bad guy?" It was an okay film altogether but wow, it needed to be simplified... #spiderman
can we get rid of mary jane (kirsten ugs) and replace her with gwen stacey? or even the russian neighbor? please? attractive female leads that can actually act please? #spiderman
@GreyHammer: I never got the hate for Dunst, and beyond that it seems like a waste of time complaining about it. She's signed on for the 4th film and Maguire and Raimi seem to like her. I don't think she's going anywhere.
@Presidentpez: she cant act what so ever. that was fine when she wasn't hideous but once you get ugly the dushku school of acting doesnt fly anymore. #spiderman
@GreyHammer: I was thinking this a while ago. They should pull a reverse Gwen Stacy and have Mary Jane die. I also love the Russian neighbor. She seemed like such a weird character that I was hoping for more of her or that she was some obscure character in the comics.
Side note: The girl who plays Alia in David Lynch's Dune was apparently up for the role of Mary Jane. Look her up on IMDB. She is attractive. #spiderman
@phoghat: I dunno, I've never met her. She's turned in some good to great performances. The Cat's Meow, Virgin Suicides, and Marie Antoinette to name a few. Some great directors seem to enjoy working with her, and despite the fact that you guys don't masturbate to pictures of her every night this doesn't seem to be changing any time soon. So why not just get over it? #spiderman
@SeverinoLimpet: I thought Oakley had a lock on unobtainium. I still have a pair of their hideously expensive sunglasses with an "unobtainium frame" around here somewhere.
We aim to entertain. Well, we also respect women, and someday, homosexuals as well. Signs that as a nation, we are advancing. I need to remind myself of this from time to time, so many dbags out there... Its just they (dbags) make the biggest scene, the good people just keep going on with their lives.

The angst in Spider-Man 4 seemed kind of pointless in my opinion. Hence, wangst.
I'm all for angst as a means to create drama. But when it gets needlessly cyclical... #spiderman
