Five Fists of Science is a fantastic read.
Fraction was making Tesla cool before all the other steampunk fans jumped on the bandwagon.
There, I said it. #angel
@Illogic: I think it's a "I'm going to say something random and innocent since I do not want to answer that question in any way, for fear of providing spoilers" thing.
@Illogic: Weather? That would be Spikes method of skirting the question. You know, like when you're out with a friend, and someone is confessing something horrible on their cell phone next to you, and you just look at your friend and nervously say: "Lovely weather we're having."
@tetracycloide:
well, Spike (and many alternate-history authors, i assume) 'cheat' by just saying it's like our world... but different. they have a baseline to work from which, as residents of that world, we as reader are probably familiar with. they don't have to do all the world-building, they just have to establish the bits that are changed.
@braak:
she's saying it's a cheat in the sense that she doesn't have to write story, but instead infuses her character with that personality and history with their speech patterns. not a cheat for someone who finds any creative writing difficult, but perhaps easier for those who already know their characters intimately, and have to work at bringing out their stories.
@SanjulaSils: but fictional worlds are always exactly like our world... only different. in a fictional universe no one has to explain why gravity is there because unless it's different it requires no explination. i guess what i'm trying to say is i had no idea templar, az was an alternate history while i was reading it. i just thought it was fiction.
@SanjulaSils: I'm not really sure how that's a "cheat" though. Are you supposed to be writing history for characters that your reader is never going to see? I thought infusing characters with personality by changing their speech patterns just counted as "regular." As in, "yes, I gave that character personality in the regular way, by making specific choices about what they look like and how they talk."
i'm not sure i understand the 'alternate history' cheat. wouldn't it be just as easy to make up a city name and then use the 'it's fiction' cheat? so i guess it's a cheat in the sense that the author never has to come up with their own name for something and instead uses an existing name but i don't belive that's what was meant by 'it's a cheat.'
@tetracycloide: I'm not sure if this guy really knows what "cheats" mean at all. I think developing a unique speech pattern for a character rather than just copying the speech pattern from someone you know is actually the opposite of a cheat.
@braak: i know! she says 'write the most natural dialogue' as if writting in an acent was natural. it's hard as hell. i know because every time i try it just looks like giberish.
@allium: There's only one gender specific pronoun there, I must have missed it and assumed that Spike was a guy because the only other person I know of named Spike is also a guy.
Not that this is especially pertinent to the matter at hand.
I'm really glad you guys got to this comic! I've been reading it for a while, and the sureal-alternate universe is kind of just to the right of our own, but never so clearly defined that there aren't a number of things in it that are completely bizzare and unexplainable.
It's a really really great comic, and then of course, there's the al-star winning line:
"THIS IS SCIENCE, BENNY. LET TH' COCK OF SCIENCE FUCK YOU."
I've passed this by (at NY Comic Con? MOCCA Art Fest?) and was intrigued by the art- and the "impossibly plump woman" (what?!?)- but I didn't pick up on the alternate reality angle. It looks really cool, I'm going to buy* one of her books right now.
Thanks for covering some webcomics!

I live in Arizona, and this isn't too far off.
Polarized, backward, barbaric, lazy, selfish, fascist, cheap, snotty (for no damn good reason) disorganized, short-sighted, mean-spirited,.... that about sums up Maricopa County.
@Azogue: Hey! That is my computer's name, Azogue! Also, I was reared in Glendale and Scottsdale. You are spot-on. The people are friendlier there than in the Midwest, where I now reside, but it is largely on the surface. Flagstaff, now that is another story. It is like the rest of Arizona had a baby with Austin or Santa Cruz.
@The Curse of Millhaven: haha, i grew up in the midwest and now reside in arizona. honestly i think the people are the same. the key to becoming friends with any midwesterner is to go and get drunk with them. and i agree with Azogue's assessment of AZ. it's not just Maricopa, it's everywhere.
Templar, AZ is unique and compelling, and no more than a few strips in, I was hooked. It's really fantastic. Everyone should give it a shot, so long as they're not easily offended. ;)
@GreyHammer: I'm not sure what I'm feeling here. On one hand you said "hipster" which sorta makes me hate you, on the other you said "rag" which makes me love you... I'm so foncused!
@GreyHammer: If you immediately dismiss something as being too "hipster", you might be one. ::thumbs through Field Guide to the Urban Hipster:: Yup. That's one of the key characteristics.
Er. You guys do realize Spike/Angel's been canon since Season 5 of Angel, right? It was very heavily implied in at least two episodes and Joss all but confirmed it on one of the S5 DVD commentaries.
This is nothing new, at all. Sadly, neither is the homophobia.
@KarmaChameleon: implied? i thought those episodes were fairly explicit. although i am not sure if it was implied that Straight Man turned Evil equates to Gay Vampire sex.
But I am quite ok with David B. and James M. snogging, however we get there.
