...the Iraq problem is solved.
...the war in Afghanistan is finished.
...New Orleans is restored.
...the economy improves.
And, really, the rule is you're allowed to bitch about a breakup for half the time of the relationship. Applying that to Bush means I get at least 3 more years to make fun of that idiot.
The biggest issue of our time is global climate change. I wouldn't be surprised if the next Trek movie has the Enterprise crew trying to stop some global climate disaster somewhere.
@RandomFrequentFlierDent: Little known fact: That scene was based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Read act 4, scene 5. Petruchio puts a Cardassian-level mindfuck on Kate.
Well, if the crazy-ass Federation president responded to the destruction of Vulcan by attacking...the Klingons (who didn't actually have anything to do with the destruction of Vulcan)...you could get some modern-day social commentary out of that. And some kick-ass space-battle fx.
Maybe this team will have the guts (unlike the Berman era) to include gay people on any level this time around. Wether it be an actual character or just some kind of background acknowledgment. The gay Trek fans will take what they can get at this point. I think that's certainly a very up to date social issue.
If they want to be topical, they should have the Enterprise crew fight an impending ban on vulcan/human interspecies marriages.
The romantic subplot would automatically surface once Kirk and Spock realize they both share the same passion for intergalactic liberty and lens flares.
Then Uhura could also get that fight scene she wanted with Kirk!
It will be about the ongoing war between the people who are Arab on the right side and Israeli on the left side and the people who are Israeli on the right side and Arab on the left side.
This sounds like maybe we're going to see that in this alternate reality that Khan Moonien Singh was found earlier and sent to Space Guantanamo and is tortured and gravely mistreated.
Thus, when he breaks out and swears vengeance against Starfleet, he will be a more complicated and ambiguous character.
Sounds like a "safe-bet" follow up. A war in space is a gaurantee at the box office. Space fights, lasers, spacesplosions... and maybe even some kind of dog fight involving individual piloted attack ships, who knows what else they'll take from StarWars? but it should be cool.
Reflecting modern day issues sounds like a review I read once regarding Battlestar being the best show on television exactly because of its clever portrayal of modern issues.... so its a safe bet, and it should look really cool. I was most impressed by the space battle scenes, they looked just phenomenal in Imax, more more more please.
Oh and at the very very end like after the credits or something, have the SS Botany Bay float by...

Have any of you ever watched the Original Series or Next Generation?
Next thing you know, people will be complaining about the X-Men being a metaphor for racism/discrimination.
