In reply to Why The World Needs A New Space: 1999
Paging Rom Moore -- after all, he always mentioned that Space: 1999 was the inspiration for the standard opening credits for the rebooted BSG.

The theme to SPACE1999 is still one of my favorite pieces of music, and the Eagle spacecraft they used still hold the title of most realistic looking spacecraft I've ever seen in a show. Love it, love it, love it!

@DragonsDream: What we need is a series of articles dealing with Gerry Anderson, and how awesome he is (Annalee: this is a prime opportunity to smoke weed in the name of journalism! you know, take one for the team! ...you'd kinda be like a superhero....)

Make no mistake - 80s nostalgia is almost over, and 90s nostalgia is on its way. We're already running out of 80s culture to obsess over, so we're going to have to relive the nineties one way or another.

Evidenced by the fact that you can buy Tail Spin and Captain Planet T shirts at Hot Topic....

If someone asked me to pitch them on how to use this property, I'd say: Make a comedy about someone trying to use this property.

    It could be very funny.

@twophrasebark: Um, didn't they try that with the BEWITCHED movie? Just saying, so sar the idea's 0-for-1 here...

Not really. Bewitched isn't a property that would be difficult to adapt, per se. Nora Ephron tried to make three movies with her screenplay. A movie about a real-life witch. A movie about an old TV show being adapted. And a movie about a washed up actor.

But none of them were about a property that would be almost pointless to adapt and based on a premise that seems almost inert. Really, it would be more like The Producers than Bewitched.

The sum of all the parts of Ephron's movie didn't add up to much. Bewitched isn't a property that lends itself to being funny in a self-referential way.

IMHO, Space 1999 is so unsaleable and so unsalvageable that it seems like fodder for a movie or documentary about the process of trying to reboot it.

Juliet Landau sure got her mother's eyes. I remember watching her as Drusilla on Buffy and wondering why she seemed so familiar. Duh.

Possibly the best theme tune ever written and certainly one of the strangest shows. The thing is? I could actually get behind a remake of this. Play up the Disaster! In!Spaaaaace! angle, dial back the disco aliens and you've got something potentially a lot of fun.

if they did an update, instead of it moving at magical speeds, I'd have them going into stasis between systems..

You know, I can almost picture this. You could start with a little faux-documentary, showing some moon landing footage, moon-base construction in the 70s, then cut to 1999, showing the sort of shabby 70s infrastructure of the moonbase.

Instead of having them going to a new solar system each week--the most ridiculous part of the original--they could be moving at a more reasonable sub-light speed, so the emphasis could be on the dynamics of the lunar survivors, like early Lost, rather than on encounters with weird aliens and whatnot.

while the show maybe silly at times, (tho being a 70's child that watched it first time round, never missing it and I still watch it from time to time now), you gotta admit the Eagles are a beautifully designed ship...

@KhaiJB: Yep, I even had the model as a kid. There was a bad-ass version of the Eagle called the Hawk as well.

And that Maya was teh hot.

Rather than remake this why do you not go out and buy the original DVDBoxsets.do your self a favor and disregard this krap.We should want more new original scifis not more unoriginal remakes/reboots.
I refuse to watch even one more remake.I will bnevr be watching remakes again and I will enjoy the immense library of media I own whenever a remake is on.
