@d_r_e: really, that's the pinicle of commenting, a movie quote? i mean i'll invoke cultural memes to make quick friends over the intertubes as often as the next guy but it's not a coup de gras it's more a run of the mill.
It's difficult to get stem cells because most of them come from embryos, which triggers both logistical and ethical problems for researchers.
I've never heard of a researcher having ethical problems with embryonic stem cells, since they all come from embryos that are going to be disposed of anyway.
The non-factual nature of the comment seems pretty simple to discern - the anti-stem-cell Republicans aren't against funding medical research with Gov't. dollars, at all. They're mostly rich old men, who have a lot to gain from medical technology advancement. They are against stem-cell research for ridiculous, unscientific reasons, which this development seems to bypass; thus, they likely have no interest in blocking federal funding for this technique.

@Klebert L. Hall: The thing is though, Republicans tend to be uneducated about this stuff. They hear the word "stem cell" and immediately go on the offense. Now I'm not saying all Republicans are like that. But a good portion aren't very open minded at all.
Sweet!!! The United States alone could provide all the stem cells needs of the entire world for generations. Heck, Texas would be enough for the entire Asian continent! Yay, fat-ass America!!!!
@Annalee Newitz: We could start up a new Fat for Oil program. Hell, with the amount of fat sloshing around the US, we could probably use it to wipe out all our trade deficits! I'm willing to do my part - it's a win-win!
@Citizen Kang: So this is the future we foresee: ads touting "organically grown free range Americans" competing against "farm factory mass produced Americans". Interesting.
@Annalee Newitz: Considering how many McDonald's, Burger Kings and KFC's there are worldwide, I think we've already shared our wealth of fat with the rest of the world.
@crashedpc : ゴキブリ and 蟑螂 division: A few days ago I had something at The Counter which was weird.
Grilled Pineapple, Red Peppers, Lettuce, gruyere cheese, fried egg, and Kung Pao sauce.
Since the sauce was on the side, I tried the burger as is...ALL the taste canceled each other out! When I put the kung pao, I had a little bit of sweet spice that disappeared quickly.
Also, if you get the chance, eat cool ranch doritos and frito-lay chips around a 1:1 size ratio. The taste will also cancel out (except for slight aftertaste)
@SuperTuna: What also works with Pinapple and Mesquite barbecue sauce. I found that out at a custom-meal restaurant. You just grab food, stick it in a bowl, they cook it and give it back to you, and you eat it. It doesn't even have an aftertaste.

I don't think It'll be worth the price of extraction, but who knows, maybe there'll be free liposuctions payed by stem cell research
