Fashionistas and A-List actors showed up to celebrate superheroes and armored cyborgs at last night's Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Met is paying tribute to superheroes and crazy outfits with its new exhibit "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy." The Costume Gala is where fashion meets, costume and celebrity to form the most ridiculous apex of avant-guard attire, so a superhero tribute makes perfect sense. A full gallery of the night after the jump.

Superhero Spoof "Hancock" Has A Real Story
The first trailer for Will Smith's drunken-superhero movie Hancock was mostly a litany of scenes where Smith crashes into stuff and causes mayhem, and it looked like a less likeable version of Greatest American Hero. But this new trailer, which aired during last night's American Idol, shows a more rounded version of Hancock, including some of the upside of his heroic career. The new trailer also shows more of the film's overall story arc, which seems a bit less one-note, and throws in more of Smith's trademark charm. It still doesn't look like a great movie, but it looks like it might actually be sort of fun. [MovieWeb]Read Michael Chabon's Script for Spider-Man 2
Michael Chabon wrote one of the smartest explorations of superheroes in his Pulitzer-winning The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, so it was exciting news when he agreed to write the script for Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately, some studio execs, in their wisdom, decided to bring in some other writers, including Smallville co-creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, to revamp Chabon's script. Now David Eggers' literary magazine McSweeney's has put Chabon's original version online, as a free PDF, for a limited time. We compared Chabon's draft with what ended up on screen. And not surprisingly, everything that was good about Spider-Man 2 is in the Chabon version, and a whole lot more besides. More »

The Amazingly Awful Spider-Man
It's pretty easy to see why the live-action Amazing Spider-Man show hasn't ever made it to DVD. It's not just the lame special effects, like the obvious stop-motion camerawork when Spider-Man uses his webshooters to grab someone's gun or cobweb a gun-happy dowager. Nor is it the fact that every episode includes half an hour of Peter Parker and friends sitting around discussing world affairs. There's also the extreme silliness, like Spider-Man using his Spider-Vision (huh?) to spy on the women's bathroom. Or the villains deciding "there's no time" to unmask him after their Oddjob-esque henchman has used his throwing stars to collapse the balcony he was standing on. We've collected some of the silliest bits from one episode, just to illustrate why you should be writing postcards to demand CBS/Fox not issue this series on DVD.

What Law Of Physics Would You Like To Be Able To Suspend?
Science fiction and comics are full of mutants and aliens whose superpowers defy various laws of physics. Shape-changers who can alter their mass, people who can fly — in space, even! — and guys who can produce extreme cold or heat on cue. But in real life, the ability to negate just one of the laws of physics, whenever you felt like it, could turn you into a god. Which law of physics would you like to have a personal on/off switch for? More »

This chart compares the body mass index (BMI) of superheroes in Marvel comics with those of typical American women and men. Researchers Karen Healey and Terry Johnson used physical stats from Marvel's Web site to show that the vast majority of female superheroes are underweight, though the males are mostly normal. Just to remind you, in the BMI scale, below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5-24.9 is normal, and over 25 is overweight. Healey's analysis of what this means is hilarious and thought-provoking.

Harvey Milk Is The New Kryptonite
Bryan Singer probably won't direct the next Superman movie after all, because he's too busy with his Tom Cruise Nazi movie, followed by his Harvey Milk biopic. Also, George Miller's Justice League movie is probably delayed until after the writers' strike, which means it may actually have a real script. But there's one piece of good news: Warners is already talking about a third Christopher Nolan-helmed Batman movie. [Variety, via Superhero Hype]
watchmen
While Director Zack Snyder is working away feverishly to complete his live-action adaptation of Alan Moore's seminal Watchmen graphic novel, we decided to take a look at the three versions of the film's script floating around on the etherwebs. This project has had several stalled-out development attempts since 1986, and reading through some of these it's easy to see why. Check out the breakdown of the top three below.

One of the joys of watching 1970s episodes of The Incredible Hulk TV show (now out on DVD) is the way hero Banner sometimes goes Hulky over things like . . . annoying operators on pay phones. Anyone who has ever tried to rescue a woman being attacked, or deal with Sprint, can relate to this great moment where Banner tries to rescue his lady trucker friend and is helped along into Hulk-hood by an operator straight out of a Lily Tomlin skit.

"Wolverine" Could Co-Star Imbruglia
Wolverine's solo movie, filming soon, may or may not have a script. But at least it may have pop star Natalie Imbruglia, who just auditioned for an unspecified role. That's something, right? Image by Mike Flokis/Getty Images. [CinemaBlend]

io9 Nullified by The Haitian From Heroes
He may be nameless on Heroes, or simply referred to as "The Haitian," but with his memory-eating powers he's one of the most powerful people on the show. Recently io9 ran into Jimmy-Jean Louis, the man behind the Haitian, who spilled his guts about his onscreen counterpart and then promptly made us forget about it. Here's what we were able to remember after hypnotherapy. More »

It's Our Turn to Be Baby Boomer Fascists
Heroes ended on a high point last night, despite the fact that show runner Tim Kring had to wrap everything up in the eleventh episode due to writers' strike woes. In fact, the best part was that nothing got resolved at all. Not only are we left wondering about several possible deaths, but we're also treated to this scene, where psychic cop Matt and the Petrelli become as evil as their baby boomer parents. More »

Secret Identities Explained
Super-mutants fighting to save the future on Heroes are having to resolve all their issues in speeded-up time. The writer's strike has forced show lead Tim Kring to wrap up in 11 episodes a plot arc he expected to unfold over 24. So last night's episode felt a little frantic, with characters making bizarro decisions purely to set up next week's finale. How will they ever resolve psychic cop Matt's issues with his mind-controlling dad, omni-mutant Peter's issues with a world-destroying virus, and unbreakable cheerleader Claire's issues with sparky-handed Elle? What Kind of Outer-Space God Will Batman Be?
Rumor has it Batman will ascend to the next evolutionary level and become a New God. This move would remove Batman from his pulp detective roots and make him firmly a science-fiction hero because the "New Gods" in DC Comics aren't supernatural. They're more like ultra-powerful aliens in outer space. The most important question now is, what will Bruce Wayne be the god of?More »

Electro-Domination and Backstory Blah On Heroes

Show creator Tim Kring recently apologized for how badly the season started off, but he made up for it last night with lots of psycho, lightning-wielding Elle (Kristin Bell, lately of dark sleuth series Veronica Mars).
