Oh dear... That looks - I don't want to say generic because... we'll, that's quite a generic thing to say. But it definitely reeks of "I've already seen this movie." #survivalofthedead
I can't be black and white on this one. Looks like he's following Zombieland's coat tales. Or SotD (Ahhhhuh-meeeenn). But, it could be great!
I think as a fashion, we seen the best. Let's do something different now. I, for one wouldn't mind bringing back the apocalyptic Road Warrior type tales. I hope The Road rekindles some of that. And I mean the GRITTY kind. Not the flamboyant mutated Hollyweird spectacles. #survivalofthedead
This looks really bad. Come on... I like Romero too... but he seems to have lost his touch. This looks like a Spaghetti Western gone bad. It's a Zombie movie, it doesnt have to be a reflection on society.... that's so 1990's Scare me GAR please... #survivalofthedead
@Gemini2: thing about romero movies is that its never just about the walking dead there is always a message that comes with it.
night of the living dead: racism (remake sexism)
dawn: blind consumerism and greed
day: military versus civilian thinking and human nature
diary: the media obsession #survivalofthedead
@Tomb: R.O.A.C.H.: Yeah, I know I am asking a lot...but I think the message is wasted on most people.
Just an opinion. But like the rest of the zombie lovers I will go out and see this...maybe. #survivalofthedead
Big love for all George A Romero movies. This one looks a little wackier than I'm used to but me and my Son will be seeing this for sure. #survivalofthedead
@Roklimber: I love the guys they get on that, and Peter Sagel always says the junk I want him to say.
Did you listen to the one where they had Liev Schreiber for the Wolverine release, and made him answer questions about Red Dawn? Awesome. #survivalofthedead
"Wait, wait", "This American Life", and "Car Talk" are my favorite NPR shows. I try to listen to them whenever I can, but since I'm not in the US right now, it's not as easy as turning the car radio on. #survivalofthedead
@Roklimber: I always miss This American life because of my weekend job. And never have time to find it later in the week. Stupid school... #survivalofthedead
I forgot we weren't allowed to be optimistic about things. I LIKE Romero's work, and I have a lot of respect for him. I'll watch his movies at least once - I don't think I'll watch Diary of the Dead any time soon - and definitely revisit Night/Dawn/Land/Day once in a while just because I really like them. #survivalofthedead
The only way I could see him being entertaining again is if he drops the heavy-handed "this zombie movie is a metaphor for social condition x" pretense that he tried to infuse his last two movies with in a bid to cling onto relevance.
He's got the blood and guts and post-apocalyptic ambiance down, so he should just go on that and make a fun zombie movie that is just campy and stupid for fun's sake and not weighted down by the pretentiousness and boredom of half-baked 'messages'.
Because it's not as if the first film were actually about strong African-American or female leads. And it's not as if the second and third films were attacks on consumerism and military/fascist buildup in the 80s and 90s. Right. That wasn't the case in those films - they were entirely "message" free.
Yeah, Romero's films should be free of political commentary and subtexts. Mainly so that THEE classic zombie films could be dumbed down to the point that even people with egregiously offensive world-views could watch them without having to wince every time they get zinged for being politically "dead" themselves.
You sort of missed the point of what I was saying, or maybe I didn't elaborate enough.
Everyone and their grandmother knows about the subtext of Romero's 'classic' films cause they were pretty blatant to begin with- but still it was what made them novel when they were released and iconic for trying to use horror as a metaphor for something that was relevant.
But the guy has clearly failed at trying to repeat that formula with his recent outings cause he seemed to have gotten it into his head that those messages were more important than the films themselves. Instead of good horror movies that just happened to have some clever ideas injected into them, he made 2 overly cliched and ham-fisted attempts at addressing class warfare and voyeurism that happened to feature some sub-par horror and stock characters.
The guy is somewhat a of victim of his own success as well. As indicated by the poll topic, some people are waiting for a 'return' to greatness for Romero which I don't think is really possible because Night, Dawn, and Day of the Dead all solid pop culture artifacts and staples of the horror genre.
So much so that every single innovation or theme that Romero introduced in them and which made them attain that status are now old and cliched and have been imitated and parodied beyond recognition.
All the zombie movies that he's made since and plans to make after will inevitably echo his own work and the work that was derived from it.
That's probably why he was so vocal and preoccupied about the 'social commentary' aspects of Diary of the Dead and Dead Reckoning. I think he knew that his approach to zombies is now considered antiquated and kitchy, so he has to play up the other aspect of zombie cinema he's known for, and that is the commentary.
Unfortunately I just don't think that approach worked out in the end for either project and instead ended up dragging them down like peachy albatrosses.
So until he learns to develop more subtlity, I rather see him just try to focus on the horrific and adventurous aspects of the zombie genre (which he really hasn't lost his touch with) and then maybe try to let the commentary and clever ideas flow out of that. #survivalofthedead
Eagle-eyed Doctor Who fans have noted that Matt Smith appears to be wearing David Tennant's old pin-striped suit and trainers under that robe, which leads us to suspect that they're finally getting around to filming the season openner, and that like The Christmas Invasion, the new Doctor may not get his proper "costume" until the end of the episode.
@bluehinter: That's not really speculation though. I mean pretty much EVERY doctor has had some kind of wardrobe scene mid-serial or episode.
Peter Davison's was the best. He was unraveling Tom Baker's scarf to leave a trail behind him, and as he started running out of clothes he found just a room full of cricket paraphanalia.
@bluehinter: I'm slightly impressed that Matt Smith was able to squeeze into David Tennant's costume. Not that Smith is a big guy, but Tennant is awfully skinny, and that was a TIGHT suit.
I wonder if they had to sew a "V" into the butt of the trousers like they did when Peter Davison regenerated into Colin Baker.
@NotGodot: No, but Christmas Invasion was somewhat unique in that The Doctor didn't change into his new costume until the last 5 minutes of the story.
However, if you count by episodes (regardless of screen time) then Pertwee holds the record for longest period "out of costume," since he didn't steal his fashionable 3rd Doctor togs until partway through the second episode of Spearhead from Space.
@bluehinter:
I guess you could also count Sylvester McCoy as 4 episodes if you want, since he retained Colin Baker's umbrella up until the very end of Time and the Rani (not that there ever has been, or ever will be, an episode of Doctor Who entitled Time and the Rani. Any evidence to the contrary is just the product of a severely disturbed imagination)
@bluehinter:
True enough. I hope not, his actual costume is pretty cool, great throwback to Troughton.
Also, The Rani was a great idea for an antagonist it's just a shame they could never actually write her convincingly. I think I see what Moffat meant when he said that a lot of Classic Who is made up of good ideas that the wrong people got.
@RedAntisocial: There have been rumours about Gaiman writing for Who ever since the first series of the revival, and every time it's turned out to be a crock. He's said, several times, that he has no interest in writing anything licensed.
I dunno why people are still taken in by the rumours.
@WindowlickinDaywalker: To see ninja zombie, I suggest seeking out the SOV sleaze classic, BANGERS a.k.a. ZOMBIE NINJA GANGBANGERS... and that's "gangbangers" as in "gang rapists".... There's two versions, one with heightened ninja action and the rape removed, and one with the action gone but the rape ramped up....
@AngryEddy: correctamundo, little fonzi! although, comparing this movie to those tasty snacks is seriously insulting to those snacks.
it's far worse than the raping zombies Jess Franco threw up on the screen in the 70's, and is the second worse movie i've ever seen (the same guys made another, far worse POS that's along the same lines).
i've been pawning my copy off on other reviewers over the years. my old review is nothing compared to my good pal Nathan Shumate's review on Cold Fusion Video.

Gonna be pissed if Desmond's role's been marginalized. He's supposed to be pretty crucial to the plot, especially the time travel.
