Neo has ultimate power only inside the Matrix, Klaatu has ultimate power in the real world. Therefore ... ah, fuck it, even I'm not that big of a nerd.
Do you really think that anyone outside of the core sci fi fans would go see a sci fi movie that isn't about blowing shit up? The only way they can make this movie be anything more than a cult classic is to have explosions and a giant robot yelling "KISS MY SHINY METAL ASS!"
@ceilingFANBOY: Now I'm kinda hoping Klaatu will say that.
Not that I disagree, but I for one find it sad that people like bad movies over good ones.
As long as it pays it's considered a success. Which is why, as soon as I get the opportunity, I like to insult all casual moviegoers and most movie industries.
@Illogic: Just look at how often it is that movies get negative reviews on this site but end up being huge successes. People apparently loved Journey to the Center of the Earth despite the fact that it was criticized on this site. Part of the problem is that movies that are really action movies toss in a dash of sci fi to appeal to more people. As an action movie, this will probably be good if you are one of those people who can separate good acting and a good script from entertainment, but as a full fledged sci fi movie this may fail.
It would be great if Bender makes a cameo in this movie, though.
@reddingofish: I had never thought of that, but a well done (see: R rated) remake of Star Wars could be incredible. It would have to happen after Lucas kicks it though...
Though its probably best that as few people as possible realize this new movie is a remake, so that the memory of the original is saved from this new abomination.
@DozertheDozarian: If I shouldn't judge it based on the original, why is it named the same thing? It's ridiculous to claim that a remake shouldn't be viewed in the perspective of what it's remaking.
Not every remake is awful- the Bogart Casablanca was a remake. But as a general rule- remakes aren't good. People want to see original stories, or at least original takes on old stories. Doing a remake generally tells the audience you don't have anything interesting to say.

a) What is the difference between an original take on an old story and a remake?
b) Says who? The entire history of classic Greek theater was just one remake after another. Great myths are merely remakes of other myths. If we're going to be absolutist, I'd actually feel equally comfortable arguing that nothing makes us happier than hearing the exact same story with new pretty contemporary trappings.
I'd comment, but I don't think I've passed the audition yet. This movie looks like it would be good fun, but the writing and plotting looks beyond suspect and into bad Ed Wood territory. "We'll add a Mom & kid, that'll help the story!" Ugh.
@Lassus: Well, the original movie DID have a mom & kid! But this is looking like "Independence Day", which the original did NOT have, and is beginning to make me a little nervous.

But just because it's a remake doesn't mean it has to suck. As long as you take it for what it is today and don't judge it on what the original was.
