Starring Timothy Olyphant, the film appears to have the same plot as the original, but with better make up and FX. But do these new stills really outshine the original?

The original came out in 1973, to mixed reviews. The new feature looks like an extra hyped-up stylized version of the original. While many people protest that Romero's other work is far superior, we've always been partial to this classic. Still, this new remake looks like it's delivering plenty of "crazy."

The official synopsis:

About the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply.

The film will be out Feb. 26th, 2010.

<![CDATA[Naked, Bald Werewolf Gals Have Our Full Attention Also, ZEBRAMAN]]> There's a new mysterious werewolf movie on the rise, plus the latest trailer for The Crazies remake is out, making us question just how we feel about this remake: Is it CRAZY enough? And how much crazy is too crazy?

13 HRS
Quiet Earth pointed out this interesting little film called 13 HRS, which is not your average slasher flick. Instead it's a naked werewolf people slasher flick, which I think we can all agree is an upgrade.

Synopsis:

A full moon hangs in the night sky and lightning streaks across dark storm clouds. Sarah Tyler returns to her troubled family home in the isolated countryside, for a much put-off visit. As the storm rages on, Sarah, her family and friends shore up for the night, cut off from the outside world. But something comes out of the driving rain and darkness. Something that holds a dark secret so devastating that, in one night, it could wipe out the entire family.

Trapped, Sarah and her brothers and friends must use their heads as well as their physical strength to survive not only the thing that is hunting them down one by one - but their own entrapment as the besieged group turns in on itself. Can they survive the horror stalking them? Or is their enemy already amongst them and has it always been? Can they survive for 13 hours?

The Crazies
So here's the latest trailer for the George Romero remake of The Crazies... I'm not so sure how I feel about it now. The last trailer held much more promise. Thoughts opinions? Is this another film we should throw on the fiery pile of YARM?

Zebraman 2
Last, but certainly not least, Twitch has a few stills from Takashi Miike and Sho Aikawa on the set of Zebraman 2, and they are not screwing around. What, you've never heard of Zebraman? Well, here's the trailer for the first film...

And here are the new set pics,

The first film is about a man, Shinichi, who finds solace from his miserable life in the costume of Zebraman, and eventually he has to actually become the superhero and save the world. As you can see the costume has been upgraded. I'm excited to see where this is going. For more pics, check out Twitch.

<![CDATA[Romero Crazies Remake Actually Pretty Insane, Plus Twilight Sings]]> Remember the effeminate boy from High School Musical with all the fabulous hats? Well, he's a singing vampire now. But in better news, the Romero Crazies remake seems actually crazy, which is a good thing.

The Crazies
This recent remake seems to be similar in spirit to Romero's original. Town gets infected, starts killing its citizens, military steps in, hell breaks loose. But watch the whole trailer below, right through the end. I'm quite enjoying the bloody pitchfork scene.

Synopsis:

The American Dream goes horribly wrong when the residents of this picture-perfect town begin to succumb to an uncontrollable urge for violence and the horrific bloodshed escalates into anarchy. In an attempt to contain the epidemic, the military uses deadly force to close off access into or out of town, abandoning the few healthy citizens to the growing mayhem as depraved killers lurk in the shadows. Sheriff David Dutton (Timothy Olyphant); his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell); Becca (Danielle Panabaker), an assistant at the medical center; and Russell (Joe Anderson), Dutton's deputy and right-hand man, find themselves trapped in a once idyllic town they can no longer recognize. Unable to trust former neighbors and friends, deserted by the authorities and terrified of contracting the illness themselves, they are forced to band together in a nightmarish struggle for survival.

I Kissed A Vampire

Next up: Lucas Grabeel, the chorus line dancing, hat-wearing "director" from HSM is pulling out the fangs for this little vampire musical. It's not bad, but it's not good. I wish they had gone a bit more over the top... I mean, if you're going to do a vampire musical, do a vampire musical! Go bananas with puppets, sex and blood! But you be the judge.

The Revenant
David Anders, who did some time on Heroes as well as the Children of the Porn Syfy remake, stars as a friendly zombie in the much-chatted-about The Revenant. The film is a "horror movie/buddy comedy about Joey and his undead friend Bart who comes back from the dead as a revenant: an articulate zombie that needs to drink blood to arrest the decomposition of his body." It did pretty well at Fantastic Fest and is gaining a lot of chatty momentum. Check it out:

<![CDATA[Crazies Reboot Footage And A Tokyo Gore Night Announced]]> The Crazies, because everything needs to be made twice. Plus, the New York Asian Film Festival announces Tokyo Gore Night!

The Crazies

MTV Shows

Yes, they are remaking The Crazies. Say what you will, I'm sure it will be just like the original with slightly better cameras, although I'm not saying that's a good thing. I'm riding the fence on this YARM, which follows a little town that has to deal with a descent into murder and madness when their water supply is contaminated with an unknown virus/bioweapon. Timothy Olyphant is starring in the remake, and he's never really bothered me too much apart overdoing the loony-eyes here and there. Here's one of the first stills. Crazy, no?

The Mercury Men
Pretty new pulp-pop webseries The Mercury Men certainly has grabbed my attention:

Edward Borman, a lowly government office drone, finds himself trapped, when the deadly Mercury Men seize his office building as a staging ground for their nefarious plot. Aided by a daring aerospace engineer from a mysterious organization known as "The League," Edward must stop the invaders and their doomsday device, the Gravity Engine.

The black and white look is quite crisp, and it's good to see some interesting new things popping up on the web. I especially like the outlined baddies and our hero's retro cap. I'm even willing to overlook the slightly clunky acting just for the feel alone. The first episode is not yet released, but here's a trailer. Thanks to Twitch for pointing this out.

In other very exciting cult news, the New York Asian Film Festival has just released their line-up of films and special appearances. Besides the stellar round-up of movies from 20th Century Boys to The Forbidden Door, there's going to be a Tokyo Gore Night. Unbelievable! Check out the description of the Gore festivities:

TOKYO GORE NIGHT
One of the most insane new voices in cinema is the screaming howl of Yoshihiro Nishimura, director of TOKYO GORE POLICE, and special effects genius (who also did the effects for LOVE EXPOSURE and SAMURAI PRINCESS, screening in this year's festival). He couldn't join us for the premiere of TOKYO GORE POLICE last year so for one weekend only we'll be hosting him at the New York Asian Film Festival and holding a special TOKYO GORE NIGHT event. First up will be screenings of several completely nuts short films from Nishimura and his cabal of lunatics all set in the TOKYO GORE POLICE and MACHINE GIRL universe. Then there will be a special onstage presentation by these madmen followed by a screening of TOKYO GORE POLICE during which we'll record a live audio commentary for the movie's upcoming special edition DVD. Accompanying Nishimura will be Noboru Iguchi, the director of MACHINE GIRL and the maniac responsible for the short film SHYNESS MACHINE GIRL which we'll also be screening that night. Also coming will be Tsuyoshi Kazuno, a visual effects supervisor on SAMURAI PRINCESS, MACHINE GIRL and many others. More surprises are in store, so make sure you wear something that you don't mind getting soaked with blood.

It sounds so delightful that wild snail norks and venus flytrap ladies couldn't keep me away from this. The festival runs from June 19 - July 5, and I've rounded up some of the stand-out entries from this year, with trailers included:

Pintu Terlarang (The Forbidden Door)
I'm hearing this film is ultra creepy, and here's the official synopsis form The Forbidden Door's site:

"A successful sculptor whose life run by domineering wife and mother discovers a secret organization in which members can watch the lives of most dysfunctional, depraved families in the town which are fed from hidden cameras. When he stumbles upon a channel showing a little boy whos being viciously abused by his parents, he tries to find the kid to save him. But his quest leads him back to a secret door in his own house that could be the answer to many puzzles."

20th Century Boys
A group of kids create their own little post-apocalyptic sci-fi, writing about how the world will end at the hands of a robot. Fast forward to years later, and the kids are miserable and working crap jobs until the stories they dreamed up in their youth start to come true. Now it's up to them to save the world.

The Clone Returns Home
We've been following this sad little clone drama since Sundance. An astronaut loses his life on the job and the government replaces the original worker with a memory-imprinted clone. Unfortunately for the clone, he gets stuck on a memory from the original astronaut's past involving the death of his twin, and runs away to his childhood home.

K-20
In this alternate history, WW2 never happened. Takeshi Kaneshiro is a masked thief just trying to make it through the steampunky world.

<![CDATA[Unleash Trixie — "The Crazies" Remake is Coming]]> Before George Romero become the zombie master, he made a little film about germ warfare and mayhem called The Crazies. It's about a secret government weapon called Trixie, and now it's about to get a reboot.

The remake was batted around over that last few years and passed off by director Brad Anderson. But now it's been been picked up by Breck Eisner and today Overture Films announced it would be backing the pic — whose themes fit nicely with today's bioterror fears.

The 1973 Trixie is actually a nasty virus that accidentally gets unleashed on middle America. The virus makes people insane with rage and riots break out all over and the Army is called in, and that's when everything really goes to hell. Sounds very 28 Days Later.

Overture CEO Chirs McGurk explained the reason that they were interested in this endeavor because they were looking for horror that was smart. The script was penned by Ray Wright and Scott Kosar and Romero will watch over as executive producer.
