Why V's Reality Makes Less Money Than Its Promise

The ratings may have fallen during its four week run, but that didn't stop ABC's V from being one of the largest moneymakers on television last year. How good a position does that put the show in for next year? More »

Yesterday, I rented and watched The Princess and the Frog, as I had not gotten the chance to see it in the theater. I wanted to know what you thought of it?

The nostalgia glass removed (I grew up with Alladin and The Lion King, so seeing a hand-drawn musical again? My god, was I happy), my opinion is that it's not the best movie Disney made, but it's a worthy instalment. My main problem with it was the villain: He is criminally underused and gets defeated before he can become a real threat.

Also, I found the love story between the two leads would have beneficiated from being a bit less subtle. There was no "A whole new world" or "Can you feel the love tonight", which was too bad.

My favorite song was Mama Odie's "Dig a little deeper". I can still sing it! The fireflies one was cool too. Oh, and Ray's my favorite character. And I loved how they called his love Evangeline, from the old Acadian story (I can't count the number of song that I've heard about her). And being billingual, a smattering of French here and there was well received!

All in all, I would say it rate close to, say, Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Very, very good, but not great. I hope they continue the trend of doing one hand-drawn movie every couple of years or so. I think one is on the slab, but I'm not sure. So your opinion on the movie?

I watched The Thing today, and it ends with McCready and Chiles both sit in the cold and drinking alcohol. But when I watched years ago I thought I remembered it ending with McCready sitting in a mine with a flare and dynamite, waiting for the monster. Is there an alternate ending somewhere on dvd/vhs, or am I misremembering the end of the movie?

@Marty-Party: The first ending you describe is the one I've always seen. Including seeing it as first run in the theatre as a double feature with CHARIOTS OF FIRE, if you can believe that.

What is the name of the movie...

... that is fairly old, probably made in the 1980s. It was the story of a girl who went to a small village/community, that was primarly centered around a large house with an old decrepit grounds fill with ruined church and houses.

Then there was a magic chanting ceremony.

A bell in the church fell on a girl way back in the old days. The girl blinked out of existence.

This new girl who came to town looked like the girl who disappeared years ago.

She convinced members of the town to do the ceremony again.

Then the old girl came back after the church bell fell down again.

It used to be played a lot back on NBC/ABC/CBS in the early 90s.

Fantastic Four star Chris Evans has won the race to become comic book superhero Captain America on the big screen, according to industry reports.

The actor was among the favourites to land the coveted role, and now The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Evans will be the colourful character.

The news is sure to upset comic book purists, who wanted a more mature actor to play the role.

Alex Ross, the artist who redesigned Captain America for Marvel Comics, recently went public with his thoughts on who should play the character.

He told Entertainment Weekly magazine, "We've been saying for years, if you don't sign Jon Hamm to play this part, you're crazy.

"Captain America is supposed to be the patriarch of the Marvel universe. To get a guy in his early to mid-20s is only thinking about where the character began, not what he ultimately needs to become."

Evans will reportedly battle The Matrix and The Wolfman villain Hugo Weaving in the first Captain America movie.

Ok I hope someone can help me after years of never knowing what this film was called.
It was on in the middle of the eighties I think, on BBC2. It was a (I'm guessing) Japanese.
I can remember a planet covered in giant mushrooms and on this planet lived an old man. There is a ship with a crew and in that crew is a young boy, who somehow gets stranded on that planet in the past and turns out to be the old man. very wild stab in the dark that someone may know, but I hope somebody can help. It really moved me that film did.

Thanks

Yeah, I'm wrong.... Hmm....

Was it animated or live action?

@Bobbobins: I think it's the other movie René Laloux did; it's called Light Years and is also marketed as Gandahar. And if it is, it was not Japanese, but French.

@brentbent the OG PR courtesan: Well only the original poster can know, but based on what I've just watched of Gandahar I'm not sure... You could well be right though.

French? Oh ok, yeah. I thought Fantastic/Savage Planet was Canadian, but that will just have been the english language version I saw.

there's a book about a boy who's being bullied at school. the boy meets this old man and the old man teaches the boy to use telekinesis and telepathy. when the boy enters a person's mind he sees it as doors of a house. the bully's house is a old dirty house. that's all i remember from it

It involved cubes with binary numbers on them, yes?

@evildead1971: NP. I was honestly thinking about it myself the other day - and happy I now know the author.

Also discovered it was re-released as Christopher and his Magic Powers a few years ago, with a lame cover.

Regarding last night's Caprica...

I bet a million cubits that Vergis is behind Amanda's visions of her dead brother. He's making Amanda go crazy because he knows that Daniel loves her. He's also brewing trouble between them by telling Amanda that he thinks Daniel has stolen the MCP chip.

So, I finally broke down and netflixed Stargate Universe on bluray this week. Let me tell ya, I have a whole new appreciation for this series now. I still think it's trying too hard to be like BSG, but rewatching all the episodes with the commentary turned on has really warmed me up to the characters in a way the original broadcasts didn't. If you're still on the fence about this show, or haven't yet partaken in it yet, I highly recommend doing so before the second half starts in two weeks. And get it in bluray, if you can. There are extra special features there you won't find in the dvd release. Besides, a show this visually stunning demands hi-def.
