I still think the whole thing's a Rickroll and the whole island is a nightmare Jack's having while trapped in a sensory deprivation chamber.

As far as what I read on other sites that explain this, and from what I've gathered myself, if you die on the island you are both dead and alive. If you weren't dead in the "original timeline" so to speak and you die on the island, then you're sort of half-alive. Like Schrodinger's cat alive and dead at the same time.
Ben has looped through time at least once, which is why he seems to "know" everything. He already lived it. I'm pretty sure this is what Ben is referring to when his daughter was killed. You're not supposed to kill anyone who didn't die the first time around. That's what he means about Widmore "breaking the rules."
That's why Ben seemed to be such a cold-hearted bastard about his daughter. He knew she couldn't be killed. Or he and Widmore followed a certain set of rules. And when Widmore broke them, well Ben decided to break them... a lot. As in hire Sayid to kill fucking everybody that worked for Widmore.
