Wasn't there a mid-sixties novel which also had the same premise? I believe it was called _The Fog_ (no relation to the movie), and had creepy scenes such as a lone night swimmer coming in to the Manchester coast after a swim, only to see the entire population of the town marching into the ocean, towards him(?), to drown. As I recall, it was quite good - and, if memory serves, described in King's _Danse Macabre_, so it may be in print as a result.

Characters named Zero and Pops. Really? And you say that isn't cheesy?

The most notable blurb is from Stan Lee. For a novel. Not a "Kablam!" "Snikt!" "Vroom!" picture book.

Hmm, I believe I'll skip it.

@Richard Spock: Hey, novels can be hokey too. I'm pretty sure the top selling fantasy author is still R.A. Salvatore, and the top selling books are still those godawful Drizzt books.

At least this is original pulp. And of better quality! Go stan lee!

@Pope John Peeps II: Never said books were above hokum; I believe I pointed out how cheesy and clichéd this book sounds. Why would I want to read crap? Ninety-percent of everything published, not just the top-selling fantasy books, are garbage.

But to mention Cormac McCarthy in the same sentence as that cartoon-writing goofball, as if they were somehow peers, just because McCarthy's books sometimes, rarely - have fantasy elements, and to mention him second, as if the comparisons [by who? Ain't It Cool News?] were a mere bonus to that senile octogenarian's blurb? ...that's just fuckin' wrong.

Somehow I think the only thing this book has in common with The Road is that it is post-apocalyptic. Wow.

@Richard Spock: Hmm... I admit those are cheesy names. No more so than Molly Millions though. I didn't feel like the book was cheesy in general... it was definitely a tad pulpy, but no more than most SF novels. It played the premise straight, and the characters felt reasonably real. There wasn't any high camp or over-the-top stuff.

@Richard Spock: Haha. If you think The Road is particularly literary, you're a little off. It's not really going to impact the next generation of artists at all. It's just a bestseller. Entertaining and a little schlocky. Like every other bestseller. It's certainly not "Blindness" or anything.

This reminds me of one of the stories in Haunted by Chuck Paulanik. One good part was Wal-Mart started selling suicide kits, but they had to start walking you to the door with it b/c people were offing themselves in the store.
