Damn. Should have called his movie "10" and thrown in a rule about writing a better ending. Not that there was anything wrong with the ending of "9", but there wasn't a lot that was right with it either.
@Unmarketable_Product: Well, to be fair, I took his statements about his film and post-apoc movies in general, and turned them into rules... but it wasn't really a stretch. He definitely made some definite statements about post-apocalyptic films.
I just saw it last night - I don't agree with the initial review, and my main problem is I thought it was too short. :-(
I found that the style and narrative didn't let the message outweigh it, and whereas it may have made for a somewhat simplistic film, I have to saw, sometimes simple is actually good. In this case, to me anyhow, it was.
You guys hate on every scifi flick that comes out.. Your views are interesting sometimes but your measure is also skewed. Was it entertaining and fun to watch? yes/no?
@bonedog73: This puzzles me... have you actually read any reviews on the site before? We loved District 9, Moon... we even loved Gamer, which tons of other people hated. This movie left me lukewarm and I had a hard time caring about any of the characters or the situations.
I thought the 1-9's were mostly one note, but didn't care, I was enthralled by them. The twist you didn't reveal was kinda predictable, but I felt the movie had lots of cautionary moral warnings that were very subtle. Most of them anyway. It was very very layered and this is the kind of movie that I'd watch again and discover something new each time.
Oh and its beautiful as all hell. I was asked what the movie is like, and it's got elements of terminator and the Matrix, but honestly, this movie is in a catagory by itself.
'Sadly, the ragdolls and their "personalities" are really the main area where the movie falls the flattest, and it's almost a fatal flaw."
I disagree with this. I say it's where the movie shines.
I saw the film last night, and the characters were my favorite part about the movie!
i feel like this review is harsh because the reviewers expectations were to high. im sorry if you're upset and it wasn't exactly how you wanted it to be. but the film is good. and fun to watch.
the only thing i can say is; i wanted more, because i liked it so.
WILL SEE THIS EVEN IF THE WHOLE FILM GETS RUINED. It is just such an original look, and idea (at least the ragdolls are anyway), and I love the imagery. The fact that the machines end up using organic parts (Skulls) and organic designs (bats, snakes, etc) is just a great idea, especially when there isn't really anything organic left to take inspiration from really. I followed the development of this in the Scientist's diary on 9experiment.com It was great and I enourage all to go there to get a glimpse at the history of this alternative world.
@Dedpool3678: stories are what they are, only bad stories can be 'spoiled' in that they can alone can be reveled to be reprobate. a good story is good no matter how much about it you know. the 'no spoilers' culture is a blight upon the artistic community that props up hacks with monetary support driven by the curiousity of their consumers instead of their own creativity. unless you want to call a good marketing campaign 'creative.'
i haven't seen the film yet, nor the short, nor have i read a synopsis or any other review for that matter and i can already tell you that the ragdolls have segmented personalities because they are each a piece of a whole person. this is not a twist, it is completely predictable and patently obvious and made even more so when one observes both ragdolls and the killing machines together. when taken as a whole each machine, including the war machines, represents a piece of humanity. the story is meant to be a cautionary tale about the need for humanity to overcome its worst tendancies before the destroy us. if the feeling you got from the film was that these were good machines fighting bad machines after humanity was gone then you missed the point completely. the humans are dead but humanity is not, it is still alive and well.
Boom. The title of your article hit the nail on the head for me. If all the humans are dead, I don't really care, regardless of how purty everything is.
My only other comment being that, if Jennifer Connelly is the sole representative for femininity on the Erf, well, that's at least a damned sight better than Smurfette.
@WindowlickinDaywalker: Cut Smurfette some slack, she had to put up with the horny advances of about 100 little blue men. I wonder if there was much tread on the tire or was it like throwing a Smurf berry down a hallway? (Yes, I know it's a terrible mixed metaphor).
Sigh. I was really looking forward to this, but the flaws that you mentioned seemed to be all the things I worried about in extending the length and adding voices. I'll probably see it anyway since I have been anticipating it so much.
@Charlie Jane Anders: Ahh - haven't seen the trailer, only the short from a while back. In any case - I'm going to try to use the term lightning faces at least once a day for the rest of the week :D

1) Is there a way to make more of the sackboys?
2) Will there be a sequel, do you think?

You did with that picture RIGHT BELOW. Had my theories but lightning faces were not involved. :)
