In the past ten years, I've gotten really burnt out on the blank-eyed-misery-faces of Tobey MaGuire, Elijah Wood and (to a lesser extent) Daniel Radcliffe.
The last time this rumor went around, someone suggested Chris O'Dowd, from The It Crowd. At first I didn't much like the idea, but he really had the Hobbit look back in Season 1.
Basically, I'd be fine with a comedian who could inject some personality into the character.
That's a relief. I was scared for a minute. While David Tennant sounds good, he doesn't fit the appearance of Bilbo. Casting should stay on the other side of the Atlanic and Pacific (i.e. Australia and New Zealand).
Am I the only person who would love Stephen Fry for this?
He just popped into my head when reading this article, and the more I think about it, the more I want it to happen.
More realistically, I'm glad Tobey probably isn't getting the role, and I wouldn't mind seeing Tennant do his thing as Bilbo.
I'd argue that he's way too young, but then again they cast the crew of LotR pretty young as well and that worked out alright.
Still, it'd be nice if they went a more unpredictable route with casting Bilbo. Imagine the possibilities once you drift away from the late 20's-early 30's Big Name Actor types.
Ron Pearlman as Bilbo Baggins!
Meat Loaf as Bilbo Baggins!
Robin Williams as Bilbo Baggins!
Joe Pesci is Bilbo Baggins!
... Alright I'm having way too much fun with this.
@Malloc: Ah, Perlman... How awesome would that be? Cast the latter day Andre the Giant as the halfling. Would Warwick Davis be Gandalf, and Ian McKellan recast as Beorn?
Methinks there's an alternate universe where all this seems perfectly reasonable.
@simonbarsinister: I will watch anything containing enough Dinklage. He transcends "little person" typecasting. Would make an awesome Bilbo or Dwarf if you wanted the role played entirely without ham. Would make an awesome almost anyone else in most movies as well.
Even when he is playing a "little person" role it doesn't feel like it.
@Belabras: Well, if Tobey's out-of-nowhere 8-pack in Spiderman is any indication of his dedication to the character, I think we can expect a nice pot belly on the man.
I like Tobey well enough, but no thanks. For one, I think he's too young. It's been a while since I've read The Hobbit but if I remember correctly, wasn't Bilbo more middle-aged? I vote for a more seasoned actor, perhaps Colin Firth. Hell, he even looks more Hobbitsey.
@J_Frank_Parnell: Not Colin. I love Colin and it would just seem wrong to be attracted to Bilbo. Bilbo is supposed to be a older dude. Ok I think I can get over the wrongness. You have my full support to make them an offer they can't refuse as long as you offer them Hellboy 3 with Colin as the British special agent sent to convince Red and Liz to come back to the BPRD.
@J_Frank_Parnell: He was 50 but then again, Frodo was supposed to be 50 also, the movie compressed the time line so that Frodo waits for months to leave instead of years.

I don't think McGuire would be a terrible choice, really; he can manage the sort of clueless naivete that Bilbo had in the book.
