Thanks to Alasdair 5000, and the tireless work of the "Idiotic Torchwood Hard-on Brigade", I declare this to be the worst, most boring, most self-important comment page of 2009.
I think they should let the character rest. Bring him back through the rift as part of another story line, perhaps the one that brings Jack back to earth. But it should always be very clear this is "another" Ianto.
It's kind of silly for anyone to say "Ianto" had to die. Of course, he did not have to die. The death was totally meaningless and done for shock value mostly. It was well acted, but hardly brilliant storytelling since the tactics both Jack and Ianto used in confronting the 456 were dumb. By the way, most TW fans know that the tactics initially employed by TW are usually dumb. It's a running gag for most fans of the show.
Now, having said this, no I'm not for bringing Ianto back. I have no wish for him to come back to found out that the love of his life took his own grandson's life much in the same manner that he allowed 12 children to go to their unknown fate over 40 years earlier.
On the other had, those saying Ianto shouldn't come back are forgetting we had Rhys die and he was resurrected. No one seems to have had any problem with this.
Oh wait! Let me guess, most of you lot weren't around for Season 1, you are the bandwagon fans jumping aboard at the end of Season 2 and for CoE.
So for you lot, who think you TW, tell me how you think Gwen Cooper could ever be a part of Torchwood again since she has seen that every single member she has worked with is now dead except for her immortal former boss? Who himself has been killed hundreds of times since Gwen has known him.
As a wife and mother how would she justify leaving Rhys and her child to go off to certain death nearly everyday? Now we aren't talking about being a police woman where the possibility of death occurs but where 90% plus reach pension age. We are talking TW where someone reaching pension age is extremely rare over the 100 year plus existence of the organization.
Sheeshh. You guys are obviously the bandwagon fans that hopped aboard late and will leave somewhere in the middle of season 4 when it finally dawns on you that, gee, I guess CoE while a great story destroyed 3 fine characters instead of enriching them.
@CliveComaetho: Fair enough you didn't like what happened to Ianto, but I actually believe it was the only thing that could have led to Jack acting as he did.
Would Jack have been able to sacrifice a child - never mind his own family - with Ianto there? No, I doubt it. Jack actually cared what Ianto thought (or why not tell him about the first visit of the 456?) and it was only when Ianto was gone that Jack could do what he did.
"On the other had, those saying Ianto shouldn't come back are forgetting we had Rhys die and he was resurrected. No one seems to have had any problem with this."
Because the plot allowed him to be resurrected - there's no reboot clause with Ianto's death. And (I agree with you here) to have one would cheapen his demise.
"Oh wait! Let me guess, most of you lot weren't around for Season 1, you are the bandwagon fans jumping aboard at the end of Season 2 and for CoE."
Oh no! Torchwood is popular! Besides, some of the first season was execrable. And I say that as a fan of Who since Tom Baker and Torchwood since the beginning.
"Sheeshh. You guys are obviously the bandwagon fans that hopped aboard late and will leave somewhere in the middle of season 4 when it finally dawns on you that, gee, I guess CoE while a great story destroyed 3 fine characters instead of enriching them."
Gwen was always a bit wussy; Ianto was great but went out in a very moving way, which was necessary to the plot and Jack became what he always seemed like - a failed Doctor - almost managing to save the day heroically, but just missing the mark and seeing those he loved die. I think RTD has allowed the characters to develop to their logical conclusions and made space for the next group - you yourself mention the high rate of deaths in Torchwood teams - did you think the characters would be there forever?
Ummm...I liked Ianto as much as the next person, but what do they want to happen? Do they want him to rise from the dead and become a zombie? Didn't Owen already kinda do that?
The character had to die for the story...let.it.go. You can watch Gareth in something else, whatever he chooses to do next...OR just go back and watch all the previous episodes! Yeesh! I agree with @Harlot!
Wow, talk about distortion. I haven't seen anyone twist the facts to fit their story like this since, well, Fox News.
I am not part of the Save Ianto Jones campaign. He's dead, unfortunately, and that iwill probably not change. This is Russell T. Davies, however, the same man who said Rose was gone for good until, of course, she wasn't.
As I said, I'm not part of the campaign, but I have followed some of what they are doing. They haven't ranted or raved, or behave like "nut jobs" as stated in some of the comments on this page, instead they have been peacefully exercising their perogative to send letters and, yes, coffee, to the BBC. They have just as much right to make their displeasure known about Children of Earth and the death of a beloved character as the people who write with glowing praise for RTD and the series.
Someone on Live Journal decided to raise money for Children In Need to honor James Moran, RTD and the other creative minds behind CoE. Not to bride them or to try and influence them, but as a way of saying thanks. In fact, I believe the idea of showing their gratitude through charity and the selection of the charity itself were suggested by James Moran.
After seeing the positive feelings that charitable drive generated, someone from save Ianto, thought it would be an equally good way to honor Ianto Jones. Not to bride or try and influence the BBC, RTD or the rest of the creative team, but as a way of saying thanks to Gareth David-Lloyd. It was simply intended as a way to make them feel hopeful again after the unremitting gloom and despair of Children of Earth.
In fact, another group has started a similar charity drive called Ianto Wants A Pony, to raise money in support of Gareth David-Lloyd's charity of coice, Lluest Horse and Pony Trust.
These are all good and positive actions by fans who love a show and appreciate the contributions to that show made by a beloved actor and a group of talented writers.
Instead of acknowledging all three of these fundraising efforts for the generosity of spirit they demonstrate, you have taken half-truths and selective facts to twist this story into something it never was and never intended to be.
The hundreds of people who have made contributions to these charity drives have done so willingly, freely and with absolutely no strings attached. None of these campaigns were staged as a means to achieve an end. That is an interpretation you alone placed on their actions.
This was a bad job Mr. McMillan, a bad job indeed.
I'm so sick of these fans and their 'woe is us' stance. and I agree with RTD 100% percent, if you can't handle the drama, don't watch.
a character you love dies, you mourn, you write fic or make vids, commiserate with other fans, even curse against the writers ina locked post, etc.
this is going beyond insane. you have to draw a line somewhere and the torchwoood fans crossed it forever ago.
get over it, go find something else to watch.
I remember I hated when Elizabeth Weir was written off in SGA. I wrote a few angry posts. I may have signed a petition and I stopped watching the show. and then I found a new show. It scares me that they seem to have lost sight of reality
wait - people didn't see it coming when ianto's sister was introduced?
has anyone talked about what gareth wants to do? i've not seen press on that, only on the fanboys and girls who are desperate to have his underdeveloped character brought back to life.
AE: I know you couldn't tell me even if you did know, but if somehow Ianto were to come back, would you like to have the character return?
GDL: Yeah, absolutely. Like I said, I wanted to make sure there were certain elements of Ianto's life that were brought to the forefront before anything tragic happened Also I think probably a lot of things were touched on and hinted, and they were explained. I think if Ianto was brought back it would be some sort of miracle — whether time travel, or cloning, or other — it would be fun to explore.
AE: So you weren't particularly disappointed that he was going to die?
GDL: Of course I was disappointed. I was unhappy to leave.
"They get points for raising money for charity. They get NO points for doing so through this passive aggressive bullshittery."
No. Whatever points they gain for raising money for charity, they lose for doing it for the wrong reasons. It's not a case of "in memory of this show we're giving money", it's "We want something to happen and so we're going to fake a moral high-ground". And of course, when RTD doesn't cave into their demands, they'll try and paint RTD as someone that doesn't care about charity or children (they might have a point about the last one) and yet have the absolute gall to say "but we gave money!"
I've always found that bringing characters back from the dead is a terrible idea, it cheapens any emotional weight you can get from killing any other characters off (because hey, they can always come back next episode) and it makes it damned hard to explain how a character that they need to stay dead (because the actor is leaving) has stayed dead.
Torchwood managed to impress me by bringing a character back to life once and doing a damned good job of it. If they keep doing it, it's going to end up being silly.
I think RTD has made it clear that he has no intention of bringing Ianto back. Which is his prerogative.
I think it is foolish on his part to take the stand that a threat this huge required someone who works for TW to die. It sort of backs him into a corner that every time there is a huge threat someone on TW will have to die.
And does TW really deal with small threats that often?
Lastly, as a fan of every show I have a prerogative as well. I can express my displeasure with a certain turn of events (which the shows producers and creators can choose to ignore) and then my last act, if it matters a lot to me, is to simply stop watching the show.
Not saying I am at that point with the death of Ianto. But with that death, on top of Tosh's death, on top of Captain Jack's nearly impossible redemption, I am beginning to view the series with in a new light that is making it less likely I will continue on whether or not Ianto is brought back or not.
fandom - unfortunately you get the nuts mixed in with the sane ones.
When will the fans sense of entitlement over this show end? I am a huge fan, but I get that the writers and everyone else involved has a game plan and they stuck to it. It was the story they wanted to tell and it was a damned good ride, but they certainly do not 'owe' me the viewer anything, and bringing any character back is just fanwa*k of the highest order.
I am glad that the 'petition' will raise money for charity but thier statement about RT holding the fans in contempt is beyond the pale.
@Faintdreams: I had that same thought. I was heartbroken when Ianto died but man was that a good story and I hope we get to see the effect on the remaining characters in new season.
Granted, given how badly I grumbled that something *slightly* different should have been done to a certain TV conclusion, I should probably watch my step, but really- "Let's give money to children only on the condition that our fiction writers make less dramatic choices!"-? Weak tea.
It's ok to not like a plot twist or storyline in a show you love, but to get this dramatic over it? Wow, get a life. These girls (and they are mostly girls...) give us well-adjusted (relatively speaking) sci-fi fans a bad name. This isn't Twilight!
I was pretty upset when I heard Tennant was leaving DW (even tho I knew it was inevitable one day), but I didn't go around whining and crying about it. You know why? Because it's a TV SHOW!

But they've already worn the "bring 'em back from beyond" thing very, very thin...
The first episode, it was only for two minuites by way of the resurrection glove.
Then they brought back their dear departed, yet murderous colleague who wanted to suck Gwen Cooper's life force out.
And let's not forget Owen and his being dead for the last few episodes...
Ok.. So let's say they bring Ianto back. Jack comes back. So does this mean Jack's into necrophilia...?
07/25/09
RTD and Whedon.
They would either kill each other or produce a work of such fantastical proportions that the universe would implode from sheer unadulterated epicness!
07/25/09
wouldn't kill each other, but would kill all the fan favorite characters by the end of the first episode.
