Given how much money these films rake in he's right. All you need is a bunch of people running around, screaming out other characters names while a bunch of shit blows up around them.
It should be noted that Irwin Allen was doing this back in the 60's and 70's, only with less money and smaller BOOMS! #transformersrevengeofthefallen
Of course people will take this as an opportunity to air a lot of predictable gripes about the guy's films. And yes, they are pretty awful. But having concept artists form the initial ideas behind a project is actually a great idea, especially for a mostly visual movie like this. And lets not forget that this is a huge step above the writing on your beloved old Transformers cartoon, which was based on whatever new toy Hasbro came up with that week.
@rodeosmurf: Yeah, you're right. In the movies they get to swear and act like black stereotypes. And the cartoons could never afford someone of the caliber of Shia LeBoeuf as a voice actor. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
@cylon_conspiracy It's not "cool" or "trendy" to hate something like Transformers...people hate it because it is a bad product, PERIOD. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
@Bootknife-Jackson: Law? Of course hes above the law. The question is what ISNT he above. Obviously the laws of nature/physics are not even close to Bays level. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
Do they have a special feature about people who read all the horrible reviews, heard all the horrible buzz, and still went to see the movie only to have the cajones to complain about it later?
I'm always surprised at all the hate towards this film, and Michael Bay in particular... not because they in themselves are top quality, but that the haters who criticize it were unable to stay home and save their money--yet still expect to be taken seriously as intelligent movie fans.
Because I know all the people complaining actually saw the movie. Maybe this very phenomena I'm describing is itself some sort of sci-fi, mass-hysteria thingie. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
@cylon_conspiracy: Oh come on, are you TRYING to construct a catch 22 for people? If I came in without seeing it, and said "It's awful, balls awful, it's retarded, and anyone who wastes their money on this movie is a masochist" the EASIEST way to shoot me down would be to say "You didn't see it, so you really don't know, you're just spouting someone else's opinion"
They might have gone in expecting not very much, but if it somehow still failed to meet their low expectations, I'm pretty sure complaining about it's pretty valid. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
@Evdor: I'm not so much trying to shoot anyone down, I'm just annoyed with all the hate that is directed towards creative people who work hard to entertain. Just about every non-transformers movie review I've read since the summer started, has made direct or indirect swipes at Transformers, "In a summer of bad movies like Transformers, is it possible for a good movie to still come out?" "Although it is not Shakespeare, it is better than Transformers" "Did Michael Bay destroy high culture?" "Is Megan Fox a sign of the end times?". I fully expect the Oscar-contender movies that come out this time of year, will have references to Transformers in their reviews.
Michael Bay and Co. have become this huge punching bag, I think it's unwarranted, and I think the movie is being attacked not so much because it is bad but because it is cool to hate Transformers, just like it's cool to hate neo-cons and tea-baggers.
Now, if you saw the movie with the best of intentions, sure your opinion is valid.. you just didn't like the movie. But TF2 has earned some sort of special hate status, where it's not even about the movie anymore, its just about letting everyone know how smart and filmtastic you are for hating it.
A lot of these folks complain about how if we keep supporting Bay, we will continue to get more "horrible movies". This type of filmgoer reads early reviews, reads comments about scripts, test screenings.... I'm talking about the average i09 reader, who knows way more about these movies than is normal or healthy. THEY are the ones who are supporting the very thing they are complaining about by paying money to see a movie they know in their hearts, the critics already hate.
As for the people who never actually saw it, but just want to make Jar Jar comparisons because that's fun, I don't know what percentage of them are adding to the hating on Bay, as we are on the honor system.
@cylon_conspiracy: Well, maybe it has become cool and maybe it hasn't. I will say this, if nothing else Michael Bay does it because he clearly enjoys it, less so the money: He just... is easily amused. I really don't begrudge the guy, I just don't hold his movies up to much esteem.
But it has become the popular thing to bash, I suppose, I'll give you that. That's the funny thing: How many other bad summer tentpole picks are we still talking about? Wolverine: Origins? Forgotten, practically, but fucking awful. Terminator Salvation? Total piece of shit, but are we still talking about it? Fuck no. By comparison, it's almost surreal how such a 'bad' movie STILL gets talked about, and sticks out in our consciousness.
I suppose I'm just divorced from the whole thing because I didn't froth-at-the-mouth-HATE it when. I just... thought it was a dumb movie. The first one was dumb, the second one was too dumb for me.
It seems unusually cruel to piss all over the hardwork of all the little guys who make a film by swiping it: After all, it took a lot of really talented people to make it, good or no... but, unfortunately, that's the way it is. I really doubt it's that big in the end: Five bucks says anyone who puts it on the resume isn't going to get shot down for putting it there, bad reviews of the film aside. And furthermore, movies are art, whether you like it or not. It doesn't have to be high art, but it has to appeal to *something*. You make art, you put yourself up for criticism, good or bad. I don't think that's unfair at all. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
@Evdor: Well I don't begrudge anyone who just doesn't like a movie because it wasn't their kind of movie. We all do that. And you're right, this film is still being talked about. And I don't think it was because it was BAD... I think it is because it is just an insane, over the top movie. I really think it broke new ground... but I think it was meant to make you go "what the fuck? Is this a real movie? Is this a music video? A weird social satire? A commercial for Ford?"
I think a movie that makes you think that way, did something unique.
It's being criticized for not conforming to pre-conceived notions of what it SHOULD have been. I don't know if people are seeing it for what it is....Insane.
But no one wants to come out and say they appreciate it on that level, because people are so quick to question your taste in film. "Moon is for smart people, TF2 is for dumb people."
Maybe both are for people who like to be entertained?
@cylon_conspiracy: @sicboi: Sorry for any confusion, I figured it was safe to totally abbreviate that one since it was a Transformers article and Terminator 3 has been out for six years. I was hesitant to do it but one of the io9 editors did it in a Transformers article a while back so I figured it was safe lol. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
@cylon_conspiracy: I figure all critics hate movies that just want to entertain. I have read reviews that will shit on a movie for the dumbest reasons and then praise another movie for those same reasons. If you go to a website like, let's say WorstPreviews, the commenters there share a general consensus that all action movies these days are garbage while at the same time talk about how much they want to fuck Megan Fox. Really, this is supposed to make people think that they are smart well informed gauges of whether or not a movie is good or bad.
I thought TF2 was great but the plot was ass and some of the non-action scenes were jst head scratchers. For what it was though it was a good time. I certainly hope that he tightens up the story in TF3 but I paid to see Optimus and the Autobots beat on Decipticon ass, simple as that. The whole Fallen thing was stupid, but only because they made him very powerful and he was only in the movie for a total of maybe seven minutes. There is a lot that can be done with that universe and as long as get to see robots punch each other I am fine with it lacking a very good story. Plus I really want to see Megan Fox get ripped in half at the beginning of the next movie that would be epic sauce. The one thing I did like about TF2 actor wise was Sam's parents and John Tururro, they elevated the movie with their acting.
I would also like to point out the Kurtzman and Orci wrote the movie, so people shouldn't be so quick to slam Micheal Bay. They can pass the buck all they want but they still wrote it. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
@jajbowler: Willingly? For all his other faults, Bay really does know how to laugh at himself, and to make $$ while doing it. Thank god, because given how over the top he and his films are, it would be too much to take if he actually took himself seriously. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
@jajbowler: Meaning he took a bite out of the screenplay and went "AACK! Ptooey, doesn't have enough explosions on it."
So they pinned it, sans top left corner, to the wall. #transformersrevengeofthefallen
