I have only a passing familiarity with Discovery Kids' current lineup. However, there is very little curriculum-based "educational" television that is actually educational. And all too often, on any-network-that-isn't-PBS, classifying a show as "educational" is like a free pass to air poorly written and poorly designed crap. Worst of all, parents think educational means that *they* have a free pass to use the tv as a babysitter.

Therefore, I wouldn't eulogize DiscKids too hard. But that being said, explicitly product-shilling shows are certainly no better, and often worse. But at least they're honest about it. No one can plop their four-year-old in front of G.I. Joe and pat themselves on their back for good parenting.

If I had kids, and I cared, Con-ca$h has Discovery Kids and Noggon and all those 'educational' channels up in the 'digital tier'. An extra $40 per month, for Barney? Um, no.

has anyone seen the "educational" programs on tv aimed at children these days? i would gladly let the little bastards watch cartoons with robots. at least both the sitter and sittee would be happier for it.
