Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter: Surprisingly Fantastic

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter takes gigantic liberties. But if you can allow your imagination to accept the incontrovertible fact that our 16th President also killed vampires on the side, you'll be entertained right up until John Wilkes Booth's fanged appearance. More »

Sceptic challenges guru to kill him live on TV
[www.timesonline.co.uk]

When the guru’s initial efforts failed, he accused Mr Edamaruku of praying to gods to protect him. "No, I’m an atheist," came the response.

The holy man then said he needed to conduct a ritual that could only be done at night, outdoors, and after he had slept with a woman, drunk alcohol and rubbed himself in ash.

The men agreed to go to an outdoor studio that night — all to no avail. At midnight, the anchor declared the contest over. Reason had prevailed.

Score another one for reason.

@Roklimber: Quick question for you: do you think that Richard Dawkins is wasting his time with his atheist crusade? Science seems like a much more worthwhile pursuit, and atheism seems so overwhelmingly obvious. Isn't he mostly preaching to the choir?

@AlexKap: "do you think that Richard Dawkins is wasting his time with his atheist crusade?"

No, I don't.

"Science seems like a much more worthwhile pursuit, and atheism seems so overwhelmingly obvious."

To you and me, yes. To the majority of the world's population (who are either illiterate, uneducated, extremely poor, or any combination of those), most definitely not. And certainly not to most of the American population.

"Isn't he mostly preaching to the choir?"

I'm afraid so, but he's gaining ground, slowly, and that's progress.

@Roklimber: Most people don't know what science actually is, either. They think of it as analogous with magic - ignoring the rigor an experimentation that is the backbone of real science.

@AlexKap: On his website are countless testimonies from people who were raised amid religious fundamentalism and have since had their minds opened.
Knowledge of science is not something to be taken for granted. As someone who grew up in a secular home, it is often difficult for me to imagine the level of systematic brainwashing that some people undergo from an early age. These people are not dumb, nor are they be perpetually resistant to reason. I think Dawkins is doing good.

@Roklimber: Wow, what a great story and a great guy! Mr Edamaruku is my new hero. (I just have to repeat this next bit, I'm so impressed) Since taking over the Indian Rationalist Association he's expanded membership from 300 members to 100, 000. What dedication - I can't believe I didn't know anything about him until now.

So a while back you guys talked about the laser test that was mounted on a Boeing 747. Well now they've built a true Free Electron laser prototype (not a chemical one like on the 747) for ship based defense.

@Log1c: All the talk of Firefly lately has got me on something of a kick. This mostly involves me forcing my boyfriend to watch the series with me again (and by "force" I mean saying "want to watch some Firefly?")

Also, everyone on that show is so pretty. I like to think that if it had continued, one episode would have had someone commenting on the fact that the ship is pretty much staffed with models.

Finally, where's Gina Torres?

@Roklimber: Even supervillains need some "me" time now and then. But my evil minions are still toiling away. Maybe I should send one of my enforcers down to the dungeon to make sure though.

Those feats of animal architecture were very impressive. Nature certainly is awesome, in every sense of the word. What amazes, especially regarding the ant colony, is how these individual animals work together as a collective mind to accomplish something. Imagine the amazing (and possibly terrible) things humanity could do if we were that organized.

Freaking amazing video!

Researchers filled this abandoned ant colony with concrete, let it sit for a month, and then excavated around it to reveal a massive ant colony. The size and intricacy of the colony is almost hard to wrap your mind around-- it stretches over 4,000 miles, and in its construction, the ant colony moved 40 tons of soil. The unveiling of the ant colony begins at the 3:00 mark.
Size isn't the only remarkable aspect of ant architecture. The end of the video features a colony of ants living in an acorn, just going to show how intricate their system is, no matter the size.
