There are already airports in the US that rent modular "offices" via credit card swipe that have a table and room for a few folks plus internet connection, power, etc.
Rumor has it the full possibilities of these units has already been explored. #sleepbox
This is a good idea in theory. But unless they're soundproof, have an available alarm clock, and are maintained and cleaned between rentals, I can see these going straight down the path of craigslist and its 'erotic services' postings. And I love how the majority of commenters here quickly went the sex route. OMG, sexxxboxes! #sleepbox
Well, they'd better be soundproof, because airports are typically very noisy. Also, they should have some kind of alarm to wake people up, and it'd better work! #sleepbox
@Roklimber: You hit the nail on the head - it's those screeching overhead announcements that make it impossible to sleep in airports, even if you find a comfy place to stretch out.
I thought they already tried this - I remember seeing some sort of travellers' hotel with Japanese businessmen sleeping in these little cylinders with TVs in them. #sleepbox
@Barnabus: i think they do have something like this in large Japanese business centers. I guess the majority of workers live outside the city, and knowing the Japanese work crazy long hours, they just have these pod-like things in high-rises where they can sleep. #sleepbox
@acrobatic rabbit: Vancouver, Dubai, and Istanbul all have rent-by-the-hour 'sleepboxes' - but they're not what you expect - check out Vancouver's.
The more traditional ones (used by Japanese business during travel/layovers) are called 'capsule hotels'. Wikipedia has an article about them. #sleepbox
Alright i signed up to say this. The discussion for this tech has been happening for a while. There is one argument against this tech, that i have seen, that i have to agree with.
Would you allow the minimum wage airport security guard take essentially naked photos of your middle school or highschool teenage daughter? or son for that matter?
To protest these being installed, everyone should drop trou (remember to wear clean underwear, kiddies!) as they approach the line.
Casually, nonchalantly and without comment or fuss.
The spectacle would be awesome and it'd be a passive resistance measure along the likes of Gandhi. Err, if he wore tighty-whities and flew often.

A woman or man I don't know gets to see my schlong and I don't get a nice dinner or even a phone number.
And for all I know, it might be a sweaty 300 pound weirdo alone in another room touching his or her self.
Yeah.
Gross. Creepy and not cool.
