It's been twenty three years since Cronenberg gave us The Fly. We've had two decades of knowing how to make a convincing fly-monster and THIS is what they decide to do? "Here, take this giant novelty headpiece and put on some gloves, that'll do"
Even the Mansquito creature designs were better than that.
I also live how these aliens not only wear khaki jumpsuits, they wear off-the-rack motorcross pit crew jumpsuits covered in big plastic zippers with those stupid little 3" aglet zipper pulls that you find on every single ski-jacket manufactured in the last 15 years.
Yep. That's just sooooooooooooo alien looking, that is!
So, basically just slightly less dapper versions of the husks from 'Ghostlight.'
I hate to say it, but this will be the second episode in a row where the new monsters have been... kind of lame.
You'd expect flappy cloth "robot monster" suits and tan coveralls from a Peter Davison episode, but not 2009. If you can't afford to give your monster a proper torso, then maybe you need to rethink your design a little.
@ZephyrMourne: I was but after seeing the new companion and the fact that she's a young, pretty blond has left me with some serious doubts that this new turn will be any different from the old one.
@mekki: ... Yeah. I will agree with you on that. I was pleasantly surprised for season 1 Rose (season 2 Rose is a WHOOOOLE different story in my opinion).
Here's to hoping maybe they pull an old who and pick up some other companions along the way? It would be nice to have more than just 1 doc and 1 companion. Maybe two or three companions? That could be a lot of fun. *crosses fingers*
@Alizarin: Yes please. They don't have to be evil or anything. I just want to see The Doctor show up on a mining colony or future market, where a bunch of quarks are working in the background.
I also think they should bring back the Krotons, since they're one of the few classic aliens who would look better realized almost entirely in CGI. (Plus, since they're crystalline and grown from vats, who can say that different Krotons can't have different shapes for different functions?)
Now that I think of it, maybe The Mirror just misheard the name and it's actually a detritovore, which at least makes sense for a creature that's supposedly half-fly.
Unfortunately, we can already tell from the location filming that these creatures are going to be mostly CGI, which automatically equals naff and boring. (unless of course, they kidnap the Doctor as part of a last ditch attempt to save their planet from the dreaded rolled up newspaper robots of Tau Ceti 8, which would be awesome)
@TheAlmanac: They could totally enact a dramatic version of that one famous logic problem, where The Doctor somehow has to get a bunch of survivors across a river in a boat that only seats 2 people, but you can never leave three of them together at any given time.
They're not going to make any impact whatsoever. Look at the Slitheen, they tried so hard to push them on us as major villains (with three episodes of DW, a shout-out and two major appearences on the Sarah Jane Adventures) and NOBODY likes them.
They try to hard to make something "The New Daleks" but they forget that the daleks' popularity was unexpected - they were only supposed to appear in one story, their popularity emerged from the bottom upwards, not because of execs consciously trying to push them as a big thing.
@Charax: The Slitheen weren't supposed to be Dalek-busters. They were goofy farting monsters that kids like. I have little doubt that Steven Moffat is going to come up with some damn scary stuff beginning in 2010 (although the Tritovore are coming in when Davies is still the producer).
@PresidentBeeblebrox: If the weeping angels are any indication, Moffat will do just fine in hiking up the scare factor. Or maybe that's just because I'm a wimp...but those things scared the bejesus out of me.

I mean, lets go back over the original daleks shall we? With their plungers?

Admittedly, if the alternative is seeing some alien fly-man's 13" long wedding tackle flapping around in the Dubai breeze, I'll take the jumpsuit. :)

I was hoping for something different. An alien. An older man. An older woman. Not Rose 2.0.

Man, the universe is a strange and fucked up place, but I bet the Doctor has never come face to face with a Sesame Street monster before.

What about the Ice Warriors? Or the Autons?
And I can only assume they mean "creatures" more than "villains" cause other wise The Master is a ridiculous omission.
