My wife's read all of the Lightning Thief books and she's really liked them; I haven't, but I've read all of Riordian's Tres Navarre detective stories, which are pretty great. He's a former-English-professor tai-chi-wielding detective with a knack for getting into too much trouble and a cat named Robert Johnson. Good times.
I have walked through a land of sorrow and cattle,
A land of the meek led by fate.
I have walked through a land with brutes playing heroes,
With blunder and anger and hate.
I have seen your Tim, your Roger, your Sean,
I have seen them play furious and fierce.
So I dream of a while,
When a man built from guile,
I dream of a god we'll call Pierce.

Aw, this looks fun, too bad it looks like the plot was lifted straight from Harry Potter. Can we retire the ole' "kid's life sucks until magic takes him off to a school and makes it awesome" motive? At least for a few years?
@Alexis: It's not like Rowling invented the school for magical children either. The movies, yeah, are probably timed because someone wants another Potteresque franchise. If it helps, his school years are perfectly normal, it's the summer camp that's magical.
If it can get pass the first movie and get a better SFX budget then maybe it will reach Potter levels by the end of its franchise, but off the bat, heck no.
@cletar: Medusa was once very beautiful. She would often boast about her beautiful hair. I think in mythology one of the Gods got envious, and turned her hair to snakes as revenge. Assuming her face didn't change, she should still be beautiful.
@cletar: The myth can go both ways. Sometimes Medusa and her sisters were born hideous monsters and sometimes Medusa is a gorgeous woman cursed by the gods to look monstrous. And sometimes she is a mix of monster and beauty, like the Umadusa up there.
The best thing about mythology is that because of all the different myths you usually really have to screw it up before it is "incorrect".
@mustlovebooknerd: That's a later version of the myth, (I think that version was in Ovid's Metamorphosis?) but older versions also say that she and her sisters were born as horrible monsters.
@SinisterBill: Evolution of mythology: the original epic retcon.
it wont be the next Harry Potter for 2 reasons:
1 - the Harry Potter books were huge well before the first movie - and these books (while very good I think) are not in that league.
2 - the filmmakers desperately want it to be - audiences can smell this a mile away...

Duas Thurmans
Tres Thurmans
...
Hey, some people count sheep. I count Thurmans. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to help me sleep, quite the contrary...

Probably need to get rid of Columbus as well.
I loved that water effect though.

I'm pretty sure these aren't the finished effects. Pause the screen during the firefight in the museum and you see some kind of weird flat monster.
