Why Joss And Buffy Don't Need Each Other |

Even if the remake sucks, the existing awesome Buffy gets more exposure. If the remake is awesome, it will have people craving more Buffy, and the series is the next logical step -- and we'll have an awesome new Buffy movie as well. While it is definitely in bad taste that the Kuzuis did this without getting Joss's blessing, this is not the end of the world.
Ideally, though, it seems only fair that the man who created the character should at least get to make some money off of the venture.

Network tv can never be as good as it should be as long as the creativity and story are reliant on advertisers and a broken ratings system.

No.

Sorry, it's not nor even close.

I'm fine with them creating a new film about a teenage vampire hunter, we could probably do with a new one of those. Just... make it its own thing. If it's not going to have "Buffy" characters or actors or Joss or Spike or possibly even Sunnydale, then why hold fast to the name?
I understand that all of this flies in the face of marketing and rights and blah blah. But I'm much more likely to see a new movie called "Madison" about a urban vampire hunter who goes to a prep school than I am a reboot of Buffy, who's not really cold in the grave yet, even.

Sure there are plenty of financial reasons to do it, Vampires and Reboots are both in right now.
But anyone who thinks that the idea is at all defensible on a creative basis is full of crap.

BtVS is still a strong part of our current culture. The franchise is still alive. The fandom is very active, everyone knows it or knows of it, and the series means a lot more to us now than the original series of "that cheesy old show about the evil robots and the guys with silly-looking landing lights in their space helmets" did before the remake. (I jest because I love.) And after 7 seasons, novels, comics... the verse is huge, and it's told so many different stories that it's pretty much played out. This remake isn't feeling like it's based on the genuine inspiration to explore a unique take on the franchise, but rather a way to make a quick buck off someone else's hard work. Joss MADE the Buffy franchise, and even though I'm not his biggest fan (or Buffy's for that matter, though I do love most of it), I think it's pretty cheap of them to pointlessly "remake" something that is still kind of in the process of being "made" while the original creator is still making it. They're trying to rekindle (and capitalize off) the Buffy love, but by timing it this way they're purposefully rekindling the love of JOSS's Buffy to sell their own unrelated product. (Whereas Moore's product was sold on its own merits, since people weren't really buying the original series anymore.)
Financially sound, but creatively it's bullshit. I'm not surprised BtVS fans find it offensive, because it is. Not to mention it's probably going to be made to appeal specifically to Twilight fans, which... is kind of like using Joss to sell Twilight, in a way.
Wow. I really wish I hadn't just thought that. ~shudder~

There are unknown screenwriters and directors who have NEW franchises, NEW stories and NEW ideas. Rehashing Buffy (something that is already amazing, and let's face it -- the brainchild of Joss) shouldn't be something for Hollywood to consider.
Hollywood is like a guy who can't get over that his girlfriend has dumped him and moved on. All Hollywood does is try to recapture the magic with less-than-ideal copies of cheaper, bimbo versions of its first true love. Move on, Hollywood. MOVE ON!

The only thing more frustrating about Hollywood than the constant stream of crappy films it churns out are the fact that those crappy films tend to make them money. Seriously, WHO are the people paying to see this shit? And can they please cut it out?

Hope people will read it and think about it instead of just going off blindly.

Also, this franchise is not that old. It's not like Trek or BSG where one can really redefine the series' tone, it's something that still holds up very well today.
I agree that Joss needs to stay away from Buffy right now and focus on more important things, but let this franchise die.

The Japanese do this with their beloved franchises all the time -- there's at least 3 continuities of Tenchi Muyo; the TV one is my favorite and it's not the original.

Is Abrams busy? j/k

Maybe I have to invest myself more fully in his works, but I kind of feel like if you're as good as people claim you are, it should show in everything you do, not just "as a whole."
Sorry if that offends anyone.
