It's sharp and witty, with none of the flowery language and romanticism of Anne Rice style vamps. Highly recommended, particularly if you enjoyed Peeps (or 'Parasite Positive' as it's known elsewhere) and prefer a more contemporary spin on your bloodsuckers.

Did wonder if it was written by a more famous author under a pseudonym. Bottomfeeder, by 'B. H. Fingerman'? Either he was born to write books with suggestive names, or someone is having a giggle.

The magic and non-humans in the story have a very realistic vibe. Even the "good" vampire is not pretty and shiny -- he's scary and weird and dangerous and Other in the old-world sense.
A really great story that just begs for a sequel though McKinley seems indifferent about ever writing one. It doesn't *need* a sequel, but there is so much more there to explore.

I found myself picking up TWILIGHT to see what the hype was about - hating myself for it, then wondering what happened in the next book.
A week later, I'm 4 books in and waiting anxiously for the movie like a fiend. I have no idea how it happened.

The other is Fevre Dream by George Martin, also historical fiction about steamboats on the Mississippi and a race of blood-drinking immortals.

I don't even want to think about the 'poo flinging' situation with Vampanzees

The vampanzee is going to give me nightmares now.
