I turned 31 today and for some reason this post really put into perspective how far we've come in my lifetime. (And how far we have yet to go.) We've gone from computers that take up most of that kid's desk to ones that fit in the palm of your hand. From bytes on a floppy disk to gigabytes on a thumb drive.
But the post also shows things we haven't been able to achieve. Yes, we have people living on a space station. But space travel hasn't become ubiquitous enough that everyday people can afford to do so. Sorry to be so dramatic but that video sorta enhanced my feelings of nostalgia.
@EdificeComplex: Even stranger, when Ingrid wanted to show Chris something, it was a disc slipped into a computer. The disc itself was a vinyl record.
I turn 33 on Monday, and I produced that video on equipment here at my house with software that costs under a thousand bucks. When I started in public access TV, an editing machine with much less power would have cost over two million.
I still marvel at the fact that I can go into a store and purchase hard drives that hold *gigabytes* of data for fractions of a thousand dollars; My first hard drive was 40MB, and it cost a big pile of cash.
@Emmett Plant: I goggle at the capacity of hard drives, too. Having done AV stuff back in school in the early 80s, I can empathize with the giant clunky equipment that show was produced with. I'm still amazed that you can get a video camera that you can put in your pocket.
@Emmett Plant: In college for the most part we had to build physical 3D models of our architectural designs. Now I can layout an entire building in SketchUp in a third of the time. And make changes on the fly. Not to mention being able to put everything from construction documents to renderings to computer models on a USB drive and taking it to a client for presentation. I used to have to use multiple ZIP disks to hold all of that info.
@cletar: Not only that, but the video camera in your pocket records on digital media instead of being dropped to magnetic tape. It boasts resolutions far exceeding the NTSC standard, has on-board editing capabilities including transitions, and costs under $200.
@fodder650: I don't know, I think it's still great. I seem to have less problems accepting animatronics and obviously fake animated effects than piss-poor CG equivalents (Prequels + that Fridge-nuking movie).
I keep hearing from people that Heroes is not exactly that terrible this season. I'm not sure who to believe, as I can see how the staff has been scarred by the previous badness.
@Lassus: It's not as bad as last season, but it's still bad. I don't know why, but I've watched every episode. I guess so I can feel better when it ends.
Stargate SG-1 was clearly worse than most of these. And it gets extra awfulness points for lasting as long as it did, and spawning increasingly irrelevant spin-offs.
I know that someone will flame me for this opinion. However, the stilted dialogue, totally silly aliens and wooden acting put SG-1 in my list of most shameful SF series.
@OlavRokne: Which season did you watch? I'm a huge fan of the first five but after it got moved to the Sci-Fi channel the quality dropped a bit. I can understand disliking seasons 9 and 10.
Plus, those bastards kicked "FarScape" off the air.
THEN, they had the gall to actually HIRE both Ben "Crichton" Browder and Claudia "Aeryn Sun" Black! I mean, I can't feel too angry over it, was glad that they had work, but...for frell's sake!! There are principles, people! Rules!
If your best friend breaks up with his girlfriend, you don't go after the girlfriend! That's rule number one! Don't poach!
Frelling "Stargate" with their stupid gate thing and MacGyver and Devlin and Emmerich......
@Cliff_Roswell: No show kicked Farscape off the air, and SG-1 certainly didn't. The timeslot formerly occupied by Farscape was filled with the Tremors TV series, mentioned upthread.
@Lincolnsbeard33: Probably more than one...since they shot in Vancouver for so long most of their actors are from the stable of sci-fi people up there. Tracing the guest stars around on IMDB from all their other show appearances used to be a a good way for me to kill a few hours.
Don't get me wrong, I love Trek, but I couldn't stick with this one. I remember being happy about my choice later on when I heard a radio ad for it that made it sound like they'd recycled a Dark Angel plot for an ep.
Not that I watched Dark Angel, but I do seem to hear a lot of radio ads.
@Wookie1972: Haha, that cracked me up because I totally get what you mean. Mutant X had a totally rockin' theme song too, a choice blend of classical orchestration + pulse-pounding electronics, with the same drum loop as a remix of Rob Zombie's "Dragula".
@EdificeComplex: Gotta disagree. Freakylinks wasn't brilliant, but had a nice mix of characters and great subversive twists on many well-worn urban myths.
@MonkeyT: The show never hit the mark for me. It seemed like it was trying too hard to capitalize on the success of the Blair Witch Project. Granted, it aired during the middle of my college years so I never really watched episodes on a consistent basis. If it ever hits DVD I may have to give it a second chance.
@JimBonJovi: I may have opened a can of worms I'm not entirely prepared to handle. But on the other hand it doesn't hurt to play Devil's Advocate now and then.
@EdificeComplex: The Chiller cable network is re-running it frequently (all eight-or-so episodes). When you watch it, think less of X-Files and more of Kolchak, The Night Stalker. This is more of a live action Scooby Doo style show without the talking dog.

God, all those movies have aged worse than Estelle Getty's corpse in a tanning bed.

Stargate has a proud history of hiring at least 1 actor from every sci fi show

Wow. I actually thought I was alone in this, and was worried about coming out about my dislike of SG-1.
Thank you!

Well, thank you for being so polite in your disagreement with me.
I will respectfully remain adamant in my loathing of the show, but very grateful for the civility of this dialogue.

To my constant annoyance, I sat through large portions of the series. Although, I think I missed the last couple of seasons of the show.

Also, the Huntress? Kinda easy on the eyes, and that didn't hurt.
But yeah, the show never really got off the ground, and hotness only goes so far.
