Subject 1: Time to drop the TF2/Bay/Bob and Alex hate. Accept that some people make lots of money to play in these nerd universes we all take so seriously. If you have a problem with it and are so much better, then become famous and successful in your own right.
Subject 2: I read an interesting article on
why all this is happening. Obviously it's because of money, but the studios are falling apart. They have to make these tie-in movies or they will go out of business. MGM is going bankrupt, studios are cutting back on all their independent films, DVD sales are way, way down...the only solution is to make films like this where they can generate revenue from as many sources as possible. It's a business.
Being offended that a toy is being made into a movie by two successful 'hacks' doesn't really factor into the equation: they have a track record now (3 insanely successful films--all of which I enjoyed) and that's why they are getting more work.
There just aren't enough snobby sci-fi elitists to make a difference.
@cylon_conspiracy: They have to make dead stupid films to survive? Maybe they shouldn't survive. Perhaps the film industry is floundering because they are trying to maintain a failing business model. So sure, cut the legs out from any sort of projects that develop new voices and rely on these few monstrosities to carry you. If you think they're in deep poo now wait until the steam goes out of the sequels and yarms and there's no new talent to draw upon. The industry is failing across the board, not just in genre terms, and the talent is finding new avenues away from the studio systems. Adapt, evolve or perish, the writing is on the wall.
Sorry, you may be content with loud, flashing garbage but the audience will flee from all this derivative twaddle sooner than later.
@lazlopink: Apparently, they think they have to make these shows, and that's the point. They are trying to stay in business. As an aside, just about all the genre stuff we grew up with, and discuss here were simply toy commercials in disguise. Nothing has really changed all that much.
So, these toy-based films are successful, Bob and Alex have a proven track record of writing successful movies.
This is how the world works. For everyone here saying how bad TF2 was (I thought it was lots of fun) and anyone who enjoyed it is an idiot, there are 1,000 people willing to go into the theatre and watch it (like I was). Therefore, you get TF3, but not Watchmen 2 (yes I know there is not supposed to be a sequel, but you get my point).
It's not a meritocracy. It's about putting butts in seats. Support independent and quality films all you want, once in a while they make lots of money, but not always.
You're confusing the studios with noble patrons of the arts. They aren't. If you don't like it start your own movie studio and make the types of movies you love, and eat the losses if they don't turn a profit.
As far as me being content with loud, flashy garbage: you need to learn to not assume that your taste is the be all and end all. I loved TF2 and I love low budget cerebral independent movies. I have a wide range of tastes--liking one does not exclude me from liking another. I have the capacity to be entertained without being stuck up about it.
@cylon_conspiracy: Agreed. The studios only make whatever is selling these days. So the proper blame lies on us as the mass audience. SOMEone keeps going those Saw movies, and made TF2 the biggest earner this year. Bitching at the studios doesn't really make any difference.
@TemporalSword: Plus, all the hate can have negative consequences. For instance, I liked the first Transformers but had no intention of seeing the sequel in the theaters, figured I had "already seen it" the first time around.
Then I started reading the passionate hate against the film, and I know that if people are passionate about something it affected them strongly, so I decided to see what the fuss was over. I had an absolute blast watching it.
However, I doubt that would work for Saw. Not a horror fan.
Orci & Kurtzman are hacks.
both Transformers are terrible
Star Trek is such a weird film...it's hugely entertaining but the story/script is embarrassingly bad...it gets worse the more you think about it.
Fringe is OK, but I don't have much hope for the second season.
Well, I like their work on Fringe and Star Trek, and the fact that they realize there's nowhere to go on TFormers is encouraging (if only Bay did, too), so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now...but the viewmaster thing better be one HELL of an idea.
Off topic, but could someone remind me what movie that image is from? I remember loving that movie... but sadly not enough to remember the title, apparently.
And no, not Toy Story. The ORIGINAL movie this character was featured in. He had a sidekick. Also a toy.
I don't get it. I really don't . I think that the asteroids movie have "more" to get it, then this.
let's give a look around my bedroom...
"Chair - The Movie"
"Water bottle - The movie"
"Star wars poster - The movie"
Let start a contest about who can make a script about the most "unfilmable" thing ever.
Dwayne Johnson stars in ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS!!! Rated NC-17. (Guess which one Dwayne Johnson plays ;-D )
Or even better: PONG! The Motion Picture! Coming soon to a theater near you.
Last, but perhaps best: Denzel Washington is RED, Russell Crowe is BLUE in the all-time greatest heavyweight bout you have ever seen - ROCK 'EM, SOCK 'EM ROBOTS! Rated PG-13.
@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: As soon as I work out how to embed images without looking like a dork when I fail to do so, I'll use the picture to combat their evil, I promise.

Maybe this will be about a possessed crime fighting viewmaster that can view 16 frames of the future.
