I hope everyone knows the only reason Nicholas Cage made it as an actor in Hollywood is because of his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola.
There's something about the guy that screams entitled hack. Cage generally has the worst taste in roles he plays. I think he just takes anything that he's offered. He can be a good actor, just needs ample direction.
@phoenix6666: Nah. Unlike Segal, Nicholas Cage can actually act. He simply would rather hide this fact.
That and he's a serious fan boy. And rather than go for roles that would help his career, he goes for roles that help play out his fan boy fantasies. Which, sure, is fun and all but it's never going earn you an Oscar and Studio street cred.
@crashedpc /sarcasm: Well, yes, he acts for a paycheck but for the most part, look at the movies he has been picking lately, comic book movies, high kicking action, horror. When was the last time he did a simple, straight adult drama? Something quiet? And thing is, he has the talent to pull of something quiet. He would just rather do a comic book movie or a big explosion action flick.
@crashedpc /sarcasm: He's just some weird almagam of leading man and character actor. And I have to say I honestly respect the man for trying to spread out and play different characters in different movies rather than just playing the same guy in every movie. Sure, it might not work out that well sometimes (most of the last decade), but at least he's taking a chance and doing what he wants to do.
@mekki: He already won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas. Maybe he figures he now has the Oscar curse so all bets are off? His film choices sure seem to indicate that.
Please let the rumour about Cameron (lollipop head) Diaz be false!
@bibble3000: are we talking about the same actor? nic cage is the same person in almost every single movie he's been in since the rock. he's always the same guy with the quips and the slightly smarter than everyone else smarts and that shit eating grin. John Koestler? Ben Gates? Cris Johnson?
Edward Malus? Yuri Orlov? Roy Waller? Sergeant Joe Enders?Memphis Raines? Rick Santoro?Castor Troy / Sean Archer? Cameron Poe? Dr. Stanley Goodspeed? They're all the same character!
@tetracycloide: I could argue with you about how most of the characters have something unique to just that character, (Ben Gates excluded for the mainstream appeal.) but for the sake of not caring that much I'll say this instead: Yeah, but... sometimes he has long hair!
@bibble3000: here's the issue though, is the unique thing for each character something in his acting or is it something in the apperance of the character, the setting, or the backstory?
@tetracycloide: Like with everything else, its a combination of all of them. Unlike, say, Denzel Washington (whom I have no problems with) who plays literally the exact same character in almost every movie since at least 'Training Day' because even if his surroundings change he just commands all the attention anyway. But Nic disappears into his movies and tries something new with most. And like with anyone there will be similarities because its the same actor. He's not Kirk Lazarus. He can't change his appearance so much that you don't remember who he is. So I'm wondering if you're thinking that they're all the same character isn't just because they all have the same face?
@bibble3000: and its really not fair to include 'Face/Off' given that one of characters was basically just ""JOHN TRAVOLTA" in the most hammy way possible. And we alll know Travolta is a terrible actor... if a talented singer and pilot...
@blatanville: 2005 is long in terms of movies. Especially since he's been in a dozen movies since then and they have all been loud, FX riddled, action, horror and comic book movies.
@bibble3000: i'm not seeing the distinction between denzel's portrayals and nic's portrayals in terms of how similar one is to the next. cut from the same cloth those two are. i'm just not seeing the new, he's a slightly underestimated, intelligent underdog with a quick wit and the exact same smirk in every one of those roles. plenty of actors have enough talent to add nuances to their roles like facial expressions they don't use for every character so i'm not buying the 'it's just the same face that's throwing you' argument.
@tetracycloide: yea... i'm actually not passionate enough about this to argue it with you anymore. we're both entitled to have an opinion and i'm not able to say you're wrong any more than you can say so to me. wait. wait. wait. this isn't what the internet's for! more fighting! more bickering! more!
...
that said, i'd be more that happy to meet back up with you another time on a post about a subject i have a vested interest in. until then sir, thank you for my first unnecessarily drawn out discussion about something that doesn't matter. i look forward to many more...
@Dormouse II: The Wrath of Gryphon: Never could understand why she went back to suburbia with the screaming brat and the stepmom when she could have had, literally, everything she ever dreamed of.
@Dormouse II: The Wrath of Gryphon: I fell in love with David Bowie as The Goblin King. What an awesome movie! Definitely one of my favorites.... though it came out a year before I was born lol.
@Belabras: Mm... I liked the Killing Joke reference. Freakin awesome. The triviagasms are coming (ha!) closer and closer to completely overwhelming me with goodness. Freud take me away!

I hope that, figuratively, I have to eat my words, but I am certain it will not be the case.

I take it you didn't see Adaptation?
I can't credit Cage for much lately, but he was damn awesome as Charlie/Donald Kaufman.
