The term 'robot' was permanently made a part of the English language with the play Rossum's Universal Robots by Czech playwright Karel Capek.

It is a petty good play and actually introduces the theme of robots taking over and becoming sentient. It also influenced "Blade Runner".

@Kevin Jones: As I understand it, the robots in Capek's play were organic beings -- "robotnik" being the Czech word for slave.

Have you actually read/seen it? I've only read about it online.

@Kevin Jones: How did this come up, exactly?

@Trystero: Yes, the "robots" were simply artificial humans, designed and built out of fleshy components.

    And yes, I've read it.

@Pope John Peeps II: I think Kevin made the reference because of the headline, and because Asimov got name-checked but Capek didn't.

    Thanks for this!

The Brazen Head, sometimes called Baphomet, is mixed up in legends about the Knights Templar and shows up in Robertson Davies Deptford Trilogy.
