Leave SR2 to Singer.
Yes, I still have faith in him.
I want Michael Bay to do the Logan's Run remake anyway.

Or a Farrely Brothers' Superman, where a world-weary and universally rejected Clark Kent is forced to live in a trailer park and eat dog food while he slowly becomes infatuated with the property manager's daughter?

"Hey, Welling, nice jeans. You not get the memo? Where's the S 'n Cape?"
"idonhaveone"
"What? I'm sorry I couldn't hear you."
"I don't have one!"
"Don't you play Superman?!"
"No Flight no Tights. They really stuck to it."
"Get the fuck out of here!! Didn't they give Green Arrow a costume? Hey, you guys get a load of this! Prettyboy doesn't have a costume! HAAAHAHAA"
" ITS NOT MY FAULT!!!"
(runs away crying)

And before people jump on this, let me say that a mature Superman doesn't have to be dark. But it does need to be a character that the audience can understand and sympathize with.

Well he still wasn't a sympathetic character based on people's feelings about the film. They still hated it, generally speaking. And it needs a break because it doesn't really work with today's audiences and until they can work that kink out, it should be shelved.

Yeah it is.

What Chops is trying to say is that all the sex change stuff is bullshit.

Brainiac in the first movie.
Mr. Mxyptlk and Doomsday in the second.
Zod in the third.
And Luthor intertwined throughout all three, but as more a behind-the-scenes machinations guy than a main villain.
THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

I often wonder how they pitched that idea in the writers room. It doesn't even come close to making sense. And since when does Lex have to fuck an ol' lady to get his fortune back?

Except Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut

Either the movie will be Okay, or it will be terrible. Those are your two options. The problem is the character lacks the depth required to delve into a darker plot while still being true to the source material on any level.
I actually thought Superman Returns was acceptable, and think the whole reboot is dumb. They need to wait another ten years, let nostalgia build for the character, and then launch a new movie...
...which still won't be good, but it will at least make money then.

But I think it's wrong.
Superman shows us our ideals, and how they could exist in the real world. Superman shows how someone can inspire us to be better people while living in a nasty world.
There are still some people in the world who are virtuous and serving as inspiration to the rest of us. Mother Tereasa and MLK are two that immediately come to mind; people who held firmly to their virtues and ideals and inspired the world to be better.
It's just too bad that modern American pop culture is too blinded by the anti-hero. You have to BE evil to FIGHT evil. Virtues are lies. Ideals are false. It's just a shame that so many people believe that garbage, and because of that people think Superman has to become dark to be in a movie.

Maybe that's an angle that needs to be explored here. How about a Superman movie that sends up all the dark anti-hero cliches we've seen over the last 20 years?
When Supes says, "You're welcome sir, but remember we're all in this fight for a better world together. I can't do it without your help too!" He really means it.

The only reason a good Superman movie would be impossible is because people still think they're in love with Reeve's Superman. That was the whole problem with Superman Returns. Better Lex, same-old-same-old Superman, more emo/moody plot. Watch Superman: The Animated Series and follow that up with Justice League/JLU, and you will realize that a _great_ Superman movie is entirely possible, as long as you do the right thing and kick the memory of Reeve's Superman to the curb. Oh yeah, and maybe give Darkseid or Brainiac a shot in the VS chair.
@TheSuperBrando:
That's a large part of it, to be sure. Superman would be very tough to pull off as a dark character, but that doesn't mean he has to be bland to the point of being lethally boring. And it doesn't mean the _movie_ can't have a dark feel to it (indeed, the inherent Boy-Scoutishness of Big Blue would show up in even greater contrast against a scenario even half as dark as The Dark Knight).
@worrytron:
Well...except that Kill Bill bit is not an entirely accurate assessment. Superman is a facade. Clark Kent is the real person. Clark Kent was raised by very down-to-earth farmers. Working for the Daily Planet is what Clark Kent wants to do with his life. It's just that Clark Kent comes with baggage in the form of abilities that defy logic and potentially endanger everyone around him if he's not really careful. In that way, though, he's not all that different from a superhero like Flash II, who did not choose to develop superpowers, and can't willingly just give them up. If you want to pick a superhero who has to pretend to fit in with normal society, try Gotham.
And if you lose sight of that, and treat Superman as a foreign infiltrator, your movie = suck. Remember, Clark Kent is the superhero. Superman is just the superpowers and costume.
@Laffinboy:
Justice League Unlimited season 2, episode Destroyer, which was (I believe) the last televised episode in the DCAU.
