I kind of hope there's no Smith & Jones this time; if it didn't have them as star power, it would have to survive on plot, acting, etc. That might make them write a decent movie. #meninblack
And here was I hoping Will Smith would carry on appearing in terrible adaptations of genre classics. I was betting on him doing an adaptation of Asimov's Foundation or a sassy remake of 2001 next. #meninblack
What I think happened: Countries all over the world took the technology from the crashed ships and learned how to build bigger and more deadly weapons. Fifteen years later the planet is in ruins from wars waged using that tech. The last two remaining superpowers, China and the US need to find the key to the super weapon that was on board the mothership. Each country launches an expedition to the ruins of the mothership to find the key to the weapon that will end the war. Then only one superpower will remain to bring peace to the planet. Will Smith can lead the US group and Jett Lei can lead the Chinese. Little do they know that the mothership is not completely disabled, and not all the aliens were killed in the attack.

Title: Independence Day 2: Groundhog Day
Tagline: On July 2nd, they arrive. On July 3rd, they strike. On July 4th, we fight back. On July 5th through 7th, we experience this overplayed plot formula over and over again.
I lost all hope and respect for Devlin and Emmerich halfway through the '98 "Godzilla" movie.
That being said....
...y'know, a sequel to this is just a horrible idea. There's nowhere it can go. Honestly.
If anything, the prequel novel "ID4: Silent Zone" by Stephen Molstad should be adapted to film or a TV movie. SZ dealt with the Roswell crash and how Dr Okun (played by Brent Spiner in the movie) went from a stoner genius to being the head of the Area 51 research facility.
Again, going the prequel route, a film around Russel as a younger man wouldn't be frowned upon. Maybe it could be a tribute to "Fire in the Sky."
But please, for the love of all that is holy and decent in the world, do NOT let Devlin and Emmerich make a sequel with Will Smith!
God, I can see it now......
ID4 Will: Man, these aliens be tough! I need some help!
(suddenly, a black Ford LTD pulls up alongside ID4 Will's jet, and MIB Will and MIB Tommy Lee Jones step out)
MIB Tommy: We'll take it from here.
MIB Will: Yeah.
(they appraise the situation. suddenly, a man comes falling out of the sky, wearing black leather biker gear, a beanie and sunglasses)
Hancock Will: Naw, man, I got this.
NO! Just NO! I enjoyed the first movie for it's corny and humorous summer blockbuster plot, but it was one of those movies that doesn't require a sequel. Especially since Jeff Goldblum gave himself a eulogy.
@Makidian: The sequel should deal with the impact of all those giant flying saucers crashing into Earth. That is the biggest problem I had with that movie: these huge ships crash into Earth and their aren't any negative repercussions whatsoever. I want the sequel to be about cleaning up the dead aliens, toxic leaks, and clouds of dust.
@Bill-Lee: I think that may be an understatement.
Let's imagine that the ship is made out of something as light as aluminum, and is 90% hollow: it's mass is in the order of several hundred billion metric tons. So...you've got several of these ships releasing, oh, 1000 megatons of energy when they impact the Earth *at terminal velocity* (55m/s).
What about the mother ship? It's so massive that it must have caused huge tidal events. But I digress...Anyway, if a piece of the mother ship the size of one of these smaller ships fell into our atmosphere, its 30 million megaton blast would probably kill most of the life on Earth in hours or days.
