As an animator, I can't help but look at that third still and cringe. The shadows are so flat, and 9's back leg gradates to black without darkening the doll he's sitting on. It fails to tie him down to the spot. And composition-wise you lose him on the doll's chest surface. Overall, this in not a shot I would show off. They should have only released the first one from that scene.
Unless these are screen grabs, in which case - bad io9! Not every frame is representative of the whole!
@Grand_Marquis: I think all of the frames here are from the original Shane Acker short film. In which case its a student film made for less than no budget and complaining about the animation is a bit gauche.
But if its from the updated full budgeted version, then yeah, you got a point, its not the best composition you'll ever see. But its cool.
@ChicagoDog: I found them online. I'm pretty sure (99 percent sure) they're from the original student film. Haven't yet seen any stills from the full length version.
Yes, but it's still a very different medium. Let us not forget that the short did receive quite a bit of acclaim (no where near the amount a full length feature will get, but a lot for a short). The short existed well before this version, if people wanted to enjoy that in it's original form, they more than enough time to do so. As far as I can see, criticizing this film for having voice acting is silly. We've barely seen anything yet and people are already willing to put it out to pasture.
I say, go in with an open mind, you'll probably enjoy it. This movie looks great and it's not very often that we get a full-length, big (somewhat) budget, animated film that is willing to take risks.
@Evlsushi: It'll be marketed as PG, which means you'll have screaming crying children dragged in by the same parents who thought their 4 year old could handle Coraline.
Where to begin? First he walks out with this shit eating grin and a "I'm so cool! I even say 'fuck'" personna. I mean he literally went out of his way to say "kick your balls up your ass." It was sad. What was even worse was him asking the audience if they wanted to see one of the actress' from T:S's boobs in the movie. He made her stand up and do a twirl!
@Evlsushi: Yeah, I wasn't sure how much I should stress that in my reporting, since it's not really about the movie itself. But the "who wants to see Moon's boobs" thing was really really disturbing.
@Charlie Jane Anders: That's why I'm here, lol. It's definitely not relevant, but I wanted to mention it. I never had a particularly high opinion of the guy, but that panel was bad. I actually walked out.
I like the animation style. I'm not really a huge poop and fart joke fan though. Is this aimed at adults? The trailer makes it look very much like a kids show, but the 9pm run time makes me think adults.
@Little Time Bomb: I was confused by that too... I thought it ws sort of a kid's show, but they're putting it on way too late. I'm wondering if CN just doesn't know what to do with it.

Go back and look at the short film that it came from and you will see what I mean.

Why can't this movie and the short film stand separately and strongly? The short isn't being "ruined" by dialogue, this is a totally separate movie.

Yeah, there was a ton of kids at Watchmen last week. Most of them didn't leave until the sex scene. Which is sad on many, many levels.
