@gorehound: That does bring up the good question of who would win in a fight: an Ent or a Woolly Mammoth.

I think it would be a pretty even fight.

@The_Thing: i'm not sure. if an elf can kill an armored and defended oliphant with no additional support (a sindarian elf mind you) i'd wager an ent could as well. judging the strength of a woolly mammoth to be roughly equal to that of an oliphant would suggest it would also loose.

These bones were excavated in 1986 (they may well have been contaminated in that time) and all the bones (from 5 individuals) came from the same site. In addition, the bones of the younger mammoths came from the spoil heap, meaning that they had already been dug up and dumped; at least the adult example had stratigraphic information (which, admittedly, supports the radiocarbon dating).

I'm not saying that this hypothesis is impossible, but this is an excellent example of how the press treats scientific stories with very little skepticism. Most archaeologists and geographers would want some additional examples before stating categorically that mammoths returned to Britain during the Interstadial. What the article says is that there is evidence for the existence of five mammoths at a single site in Britain after the Last Glacial Maximum.

@NotMandatory: I think it might be that the press is generally too ignorant of the scientific process to be able to properly critique scientific studies.
