Says Carl V. Anderson:

Twenty-one years ago Cathy and Arnie Fenner, noticing an absence of high-quality art annuals featuring the work of science fiction, fantasy and horror artists, set out to fill the void. They appropriated the term "fantastic" to encompass the wide array of genre art they hoped to showcase and created Spectrum: The Best of Contemporary Fantastic Art. The book is now entering its twenty-first year , now under the leadership of John Fleskes ( Flesk Publications), who was hand-picked to continue the series when the Fenners decided to retire last year with volume twenty.

Three years ago the Fenners decided to bring the art annual to life with the first Spectrum Fantastic Art Live event. In the April 2014 issue of ImagineFX, Arnie describes the inspiration for the show: "We wanted to expand on the sense of community associated with the Spectrum Annual. We felt the best way to do that was to provide a venue free of prejudice and elitism, where everyone was welcome…We've always believed that the health of the fantastic art field relies on attracting more people to talk about it in a positive atmosphere, to purchase art, and ultimately to become patrons.".
