Science fiction's greatest authors have brilliant ideas, storytelling mojo... and plenty of stubbornness. Many of the field's greatest writers were buried in rejection slips, before they finally broke in. Here are 15 classic novels that publishers didn't want to touch. More »

We're hooked on Doug Williams' blog/plea to District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. The concept artist's six-month-long, one-sided conversation with Blomkamp is not only hilarious, it's genius. Plus his District 9 toys, creatures and space landscapes are mesmerizing. When District 9 director Neill Blomkamp makes his next film, he won't have a $100 million budget. Instead, he'll keep making films on the (relative) cheap, because it's the only way to make science fiction movies with creative freedom. More »

Now that we're all excited about Ridley Scott's Forever War movie, it's worth looking back at the version by Stuart Gordon (Reanimator) that we almost had in the early 80s. Gordon, who later worked with Forever War author Joe Haldeman on Robot Jox, came close to making a PBS miniseries of the epic war novel, but ended up turning it into a stage play instead. (Really.) But at least the PBS project got as far as generating some amazing concept art by comics god Neal Adams, who helped reinvent Batman a decade earlier. More art, and more details on the strange saga of the Gordon Forever War, below the fold. More »

With The Forever War that much closer to the big screen, maybe it's time for Hollywood to take a closer look at Joe Haldeman's other works as well. Haldeman is already talking about trying to have more creative input into movie versions of his other books, if the Ridley Scott film is a hit. So which of his works should get the Hollywood treatment, and which are best left alone? More »
