It doesn't matter how much food and guns you've hoarded. When civilization collapses, your basement won't offer much protection against zombies, mutants, aliens or marauding survivors. Fortunately, there are some well-secured safe havens, if you know where to look.
The online magazine Architizer has compiled an impressive array of recommended structures—and several of them are not what you would expect. For instance, the Fashion Institute of Technology on the West Side of Manhattan (above) "has relatively few windows and is made of concrete, offering protection from whatever nature or the terrorists can throw at you. Plus, it's a fashion school, so no one would really think to look for you there."
Hard to argue with that. Other possibilities include the Egyptian Pyramids ("possibly the thickest walls in the world") and the Svalbard Seed Vault, pictured below. ("It's underground and fortified in a remote location, and obviously, you would have access to all the seeds in the world.")
Personally, I'd hide out at the local DMV. It's the last place that anybody ever wants to go.
