Most of us have experienced the frustration of seeing a film on the computer hacked into different still images because the computer couldn't process the information fast enough to give us a fluid picture of the movie. Once the computer gets up to speed — that speed being twenty-four images flashed at us for every second we're watching — we see motion, not pictures. Sped up a little faster, and we'd still see motion, not pictures. We wouldn't be able to distinguish between one and the other. That is the limit of our temporal resolution, or the number of times our mind and eyes can 'update' the picture we're seeing. More »

For decades, the world has relied on incredibly accurate atomic clocks to keep time; but atomic clocks are much more consistant than the rotation of the Earth, which varies in speed ever-so-slightly as it spins about its axis. Consequently, every few years, the time based on the Earth's rotation falls out of sync with time kept by atomic clocks. More »

Quantum entanglement says that two particles can become intertwined so that they always share the same properties, even if they're separated in space. Now it seems particles can be entangled in time, too. There is a force called "dark flow" that exists outside our universe, and it's tugging several galaxy clusters at 2 million mph toward an empty spot in space between Centaurus (pictured) and Vela. This isn't like dark matter, which exerts a more localized pull: Dark flow is a force that's operating at a universe level to push enormous chunks of matter around. Writing in Astrophysical Journal Letters, a group of astronomers say that this dark flow comes from a place where constants like time don't exist — nor do stars and galaxies. <a href="http://io9.com/5054000/astronomers-find-dark-flow-sucking-matter-out-of-the-universe" title="Click here to read more about Astronomers Find "Dark Flow" Sucking Matter Out of the Universe">More »
