A team of scientists who are excavating an ancient human cave in South Africa have joined forces with National Geographic to bring you live updates of their incredible finds.

Called the Rising Star Expedition, the excavation is focused on a cave that that is filled with the bones of multiple ancient humans. Members of the expedition include seasoned scientists John Hawks and Lee Berger, as well as several students who are learning the ropes. Every day, members of the team are updating their National Geographic blog, making video, and sharing data with other researchers.

You can see a fat collection of cables snaking into the dig site, which is what's connecting the excavation area with the internet. Those computers aren't just for blogging — they're for dating fossils and examining their morphologies. Follow the Rising Star blog for a rare opportunity to watch science in action, and to see how high technology is changing the way we understand ancient human history.
