Reason Magazine <a href="http://reason.com/archives/2012/01/25/science-fiction-faces-facts/singlepage">just posted a must-read article from its February 2012 issue</a> by <em>Timescape</em> author Gregory Benford, in which he examines the expansive dream of space exploration propounded in the early 1950s by Wernher Von Braun. And he concludes that even though NASA seems to be scaling back and our dreams of interplanetary exploration have come to a standstill, there's still hope &mdash; including a possible Mars expedition by 2033. <a href="http://io9.com/5879386/the-fuel-tank-is-half-full-gregory-benford-of-why-the-dream-of-space-exploration-is-not-dead" title="Click here to read more about &quot; The fuel tank is half full&quot;: Gregory Benford on why the dream of space exploration is not dead">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

<em>Most of us know Wernher von Braun as the German V-2 pioneer who went from the Nazis to NASA. But did you know he published a scifi novel with detailed spacesuit schematics? Here are some examples.</em> <a href="http://io9.com/5706091/1960s-spacesuit-designs-from-wernher-von-brauns-science-fiction-novel" title="Click here to read more about 1960s spacesuit designs from Wernher von Braun's science fiction novel">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Wernher von Braun may have been a bit <a href=”http://io9.com/5040586/a-cold-war-musical-interlude-with-tom-lehrer”>mercenary in his political dealings</a>, but his work in astronautics and rocket design was instrumental in putting American astronauts on the moon. Between 1952 and 1954, Collier’s magazine profiled von Braun’s work in the series “Man Will Conquer Space Soon!” Next week, the materials von Braun created for this series will be auctioned off, including several sketches of his rocket designs. <a href="http://io9.com/5065395/1950s-rocket-sketches-envision-manned-spaceflight" title="Click here to read more about 1950s Rocket Sketches Envision Manned Spaceflight">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Here, in a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/6funswede">rare filmed performance from 1967</a>, the brilliant political satirist, songwriter, and math professor Tom Lehrer performs his “tribute” to rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and his questionable past allegiances. Lehrer also famously set the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmwlzwGMMwc&feature=related">periodic table to Gilbert & Sullivan</a>, but alas, there isn’t a video of him singing it. If you’re unfamiliar with Lehrer, do yourself a favor and click through! <a href="http://io9.com/5040586/a-cold-war-musical-interlude-with-tom-lehrer" title="Click here to read more about A Cold War Musical Interlude With Tom Lehrer">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>
